'TRON' TV series to premiere Summer 2012; Bruce Boxleitner, Elijah Wood, and more signed on

tron-320.jpgIf "TRON: Legacy" left you wanting more of the digital-cyber universe, fear not. Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis, the film's screenwriters, confirm that they've also written a 10-part animated television miniseries that will fall in line with the continuity of the films. While a third film has yet to be greenlit, the cast and crew of the TV series, titled "TRON: Uprising" certainly speak to its quality.

Bruce Boxleitner, who played Tron in both films, is signed on. "Bruce Boxleitner is in it, Elijah Wood, Linda Moore, Paul Reubens, Lance Henriksen. I mean, we've got a really cool group of actors," Horowitz tells Box Office Magazine.

He confirms that the series will take place between the events of the original "TRON" and the current film, "TRON: Legacy."

"Absolutely. And we're treating it very seriously," he says. "This animated show will take place from when Flynn is in a safe house. It's from when Clu takes over the grid to before when Sam comes in. So if you were wondering what was the grid like before that, then watch the show. We hesitate to tell too much just yet, but it will fill in the blanks of some things, and also explore some new areas as well."

The series will add depth and fill in backstory for some of the film's more minor characters, as well as provide explanation for certain story choices. "Did we have time to do the Bartik story?" Horowitz muses. "No. But now maybe the Bartik story is in the animated series --you know, he's got a huge scar on his face. I want to know how he got that scar. We couldn't sit down and write that there's a guy with a scar on his face without knowing what the scar was. So we hope it adds to the depth of the movie. Our intention is to try and make something that is more than just, let's go get something. We treat 'TRON' very, very seriously and as writers we try to have a reason and a world for everything and not all of it gets to be shown because in this particular movie, we only had two hours."

why?

It's good to see Bruce Boxleitner getting work in the genre again since his stint on "Babylon 5", which ended quite some time ago.

Such a long time to wait. At least the DVD of "Tron Legacy" comes in Spring 2011, hopefully in a combo pack of both "TRON" movies to hold me over until 2012.

This is the first I had heard of it as a limited-run show and not an ongoing series, which I find disappointing. But then again, if the focus is going to be on answering questions like "why did that guy in the one scene have a scar" and not some of the more interesting ideas of the premise presented by the second film, maybe it's for the best. Hopefully at least they'll be able to show Tron's face.

I would especially like to learn more about Tron himself. I loved Rinzler, my favorite character in the new movie, but...

OK, I like the idea of filling in some questions about what happened with the start of the new system. And I see that Bruce is in which is my favorite part of this new plan BUT according to the movie Tron died/was turned just as Clu took over. So how much of this series is Tron actually in? Or are they changing that part from the movie? I don’t like Rinzler but learning more about Tron would be a lot of fun. He’s been my fav for a long time. It was really great seeing Bruce back in Legacy but I really wish we’d seen more of Tron. The original Tron movie fans will want LOTS of Tron in the new animated series. I wasn’t even around yet when the movie came out in 82. I saw it when I first met Bruce on Babylon 5 and totally fell in love with his Tron character. I’ve seen the movie so many times I could likely quote dialog. And not to sound cliche but Tron did get me interested in computers very early on. Please have LOTS of Tron in this series. We love you Bruce.
