'The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder: 'There's big everything in Damon's bedroom'
On last week's episode of "The Vampire Diaries," Stefan (Paul Wesley) got stuck in the church tomb with Katherine (Nina Dobrev) after an instinctive move to save Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) from becoming her personal blood fountain. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) promised to get Stefan out of there - but Katherine doubts he's sincere. She warns Stefan that asking Damon to keep an eye on Elena may have been a huge mistake.
So what is Damon's priority - saving his brother, or moving in on his brother's girlfriend? I sat down with Somerhalder on the set in Atlanta to find out just where Damon's head is now that Stefan is temporarily out of the picture.
"Katherine has a point," Somerhalder admits. "She's a total bitch, but she definitely has a point. And by virtue of that point, which is basically 'hey, you just gave him what he's always wanted,' the thing is, though... Damon genuinely wants to get his brother out of the tomb."
Brotherly love trumps girlfriend-stealing, even for Damon Salvatore. Over the last season and a half, Damon has come to the rather reluctant conclusion that he needs his brother. "I think that without him, it poses a major problem. Yes, of course he doesn't have Stefan to contend with for Elena, but from my perspective he's done so much sh** to Elena that it's going to be a very uphill battle with that. Right now, it's about protecting her."
Of course, Damon isn't the most consistent character. "Who knows," Somerhalder adds. "They might write an episode where Damon decides, 'hey, leave Stefan in there.' Damon may fight to actually keep him in there."
I happened to be on set for Somerhalder's 32nd birthday, which he spent... well, naked. "It's been amazing. I apparently came into this life in my birthday suit, and I just spent the last four hours in a scene in my birthday suit," he laughs.
The scenes in question were shower scenes filmed in Damon's bathroom in the Salvatore mansion. Yes, girls... Damon finally has his own bathroom - and his own bedroom. I got to take a sneak peek of the new sets, and I'll tell you this - Damon's bedroom is very different from Stefan's and represents his character beautifully.
"There's big everything in there," Somerhalder teases. "It's awesome."
Watch the video below for more from Somerhalder on what it might take for Damon and Elena to hook up, now that he's told her he loves her, erased her memory of it, and decided to quit pursuing her entirely.
Quick warning - the beginning of the video is pretty shaky, but it gets better. Maybe I was a little unnerved by those blue eyes. Can you blame me?
Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Will Elena ever pursue Damon? What are you hoping for (or not hoping for) from the shower scenes? How did you celebrate Ian Somerhalder's birthday?

Sorry to make a Buffy comparison, but I think that Stefan will always be Elena's true love and soul mate (like Angel to Buffy), but she will grow to love and respect Damon (like Spike earned Buffy's respect). Ultimately, I think she will chose Stefan, or maybe neither one...
awww Ian looks like he turned 22 not 32.. I want to look that when I'm 32 lol well a female version lol
Its not Elena's style to pursue .. I cant see her pursuing Damon.. EVEN if he didn't create all that havoc and misery in her life, I can't picture her pursuing him.. Elena is too fly to be pursuing anyone lol
Also: I think its wayyyy too early to say "who she belongs with".. I really wanna see that uphill battle Damon's gonna have to go on to be even remotely worthy of Elena.. I mean they already have so much chemistry..Imagine that chemistry on a romantic level.. that would be hott.. but is it that everlasting type of love? .. who knows.. I hope it is.. Yes my shipper heart is biased lol .. I just think that above all else, Damon knows how to love.. and when he loves.. he loves deeply and unconditionally and thats one of the things that I truly appreciate about his character.
I think Damon is slowely redeeming himself in a sense.. because if he's sticking in town solely to protect Elena and be with his brother... thats soo... selfless... Definetly isn't the same Damon from the earlier part of season 1 .. Which makes me think... I think Stefan needs a bit more dimension to his character.. At times.. he comes off as toooooooooo perfect..He's a frecking vampire, I want to see him conflicted.. haven't seen much of it since ..last year..for like one episode lol.. I love Stefan but there's something missing about his character right now.. I feel like his character is being ignored right now.. I miss romantic Stefan!!!
ps. totally totally totally dig the brotherly love... its soo beautiful! .. At times I appreciate the love that D/S have for eachother as opposed to the love that D/S have for Elena
haha i agree with the buffy comparison though. stefan is the one. but elena i think also loves damon. just not in the same way.
You know you're a very lucky girl? I don't do crushes-on-famous-guys, but this one is making it hard!
Damon is far more exciting when he chases all the women. Play the field Damon!! Damons character should be the killer we all expect and LOVE. Not the wimpy following Elena around that he has been in Season Two.
i love you ian somerhalder kissme killer
i wish damon would kill someone. it's been too long.
Ian: What a great sport, sitting down for an interview on his birthday after spending 4 hours shooting a shower scene. Happy b-day Ian, and thanks. Nice gift to the fans.
Ian as Damon: Terrific actor, exquisite choice for that part. Could not imagine a better choice. Subtle as well as delicious.
Damon and the love triangle: While the Damon-Elena dance adds spice, in the long run we're going to need another character. Damon is learning how to love, with Elena, but Stef and Elena are actually more compatible. Back to Katherine would be going the wrong direction with Damon; he's much more interesting as an evolving character, than a caricature of evil. Damon's going to need a partner who challenges him, someone who's an adult, with her own powers but not as a "category" like vampire or witch or werewolf. Then the possibilities grow: Damon and his partner; the new character's relationship with Stefan; Elena eventually needing to face her feelings for Damon and what that does to both duos. Then, add more possibilities, considering who remains human, who converts, whether the vamps have the option of becoming human again, and so on. The relationships have much more expansion potential, that way, than remaining simply a triangle forever.
Oh god! Look at Ian, he look so hot!
OMG I want Damon and Elena to end up together sooo bad! Their chemistry is undeniable!
