Kyra Sedgwick decides Season 7 will be the last for 'The Closer'
TNT announces that its hit series, "The Closer," will be entering its final season in 2011.
The decision was apparently made by star Kyra Sedgwick, who won an Emmy in 2010 for playing Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson.
"I cannot fathom how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the incredible family we've created on 'The Closer,'" Sedgwick says in a statement released by TNT. "I will always be grateful to [creator] James Duff for his love and friendship, as well as for creating such a rich and complex character who I have loved living with year after year... I want to thank TNT and Warner [Brothers] Television, as well as the incredible fans of 'The Closer,' for all of their unwavering support over the last seven years."
This has got to come as rough news for TNT, which has been able to boast basic cable's highest rated series with "The Closer," averaging more than 8 million viewers in Season 6.
"It's impossible to fully express our appreciation to Kyra Sedgwick, series creator James Duff and all of the other talented people who brought 'The Closer' to TNT viewers," Turner Entertainment Networks president Steve Koonin adds in the statement. "'The Closer' was a pivotal series in setting a new course for TNT's original programming, while also serving as a prime example of the storytelling strength possible on cable television."
The final 15 episodes of "The Closer" are slated to start production in spring of 2011, with an initial run eyed for later in the year. The series will hit its landmark 100th episode before coming to an end.

Classy lady who knows how to end a series on a high note. I wish other series would figure that out.
The Closer has been one of my favorite shows from its first episode. The characters are each so unique and so well-played. I'm going to miss them all.
I respect that they will go out on a high note instead of petering out.
I am so sad to see Kyra wanting to stop, but I hope producers see this as the perfect time for Finn & Provenza to retire & begin their own detective agency.
I have always thought they deserved a spin-off.
NOOOOOOO!!! The Closer is my favorite show!!!
I love the show very much, like someone said, each actor has it's unique characters,& good acting.
I love Kyra Sedgwick, she's a class act actress,& a down to earth acting, so natural.I watched the show's first episodes up to the finale of the season.
Please TNT keep the show!!!!!!!!
this really bummed me out when i heard the news but now i have a suggestion cuz it's such a great show. bring captain rayder in to take brenda's place. perfect solution.
I read in another article (I'm hoping that it was a misquote) that Kyra Sedgwick was grateful to the producers for accepting her decision to kill her character. I'm hoping what they meant to say was to kill the show. Anyone else hear this?
I'm sad to see "The Closer" will be ending. I'm another one who has watched it religiously since it's first airing. The entire cast of characters have done an excellent job, creating a sometimes quirky & fun, sometimes sad but always engaging series. TNT owes a lot to this series. They've used it to lead into other new TNT dramas getting them off the ground. I don't think you could bring someone else in to play KS's role. She IS "THE CLOSER'. However, as mentioned earlier, a spin-off with Finn & Provenza as PI's might work. But... maybe that belongs on USA-- the network for "characters".
I will greatly miss this series when it ends later this yr. Thank you to all at "The Closer" for 7 entertaining years.
I'm sad to see this series come to an end, as I've only recently become a big fan and am trying to catch up on past seasons. Provenza, Flynn (not Finn), Gabriel, Tao, Sanchez, Daniels, Taylor, and Pope are all great characters and really complement Brenda and Fritz (and her folks). I'm not sure the series could survive post-Brenda, but I would like to see them try it -- if only for a season.
