Crystal Bowersox's 'Farmer's Daughter' tops Lee DeWyze's first-week album sales

bowersox-album-cover.gifThe numbers are in for "American Idol" Season 9 runner-up Crystal Bowersox and while they are not breaking the bank, they are better than Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze's first-week sales.

Crystal's producer, David Bendeth, tweeted early Wednesday morning (Dec. 22) that "Farmer's Daughter" has sold 57,804 in its first week on the shelves/available for download. That's good for a debut at no. 28 on the Billboard 200 chart. By comparison, Lee DeWyze's "Live it Up" debuted nine spots higher but sold almost 20,000 less units.

Bendeth also reports the Bowersox's album is no. 2 on the Billboard Rock Albums, no. 8 on Billboard Digital Albums and no. 90 on Billboard Canadian chart.

To contrast her with other runner-ups, you can see below (numbers via USA Today) that her just-shy of 58,000 units puts her only in front of Justin Guarini and Diana DeGarmo. Things are not looking good for the Season 9 Idols. Do you think Season 10 will see the pendulum swing back? Or has the "Idol" ship sailed?

Am I the only one who finds it hysterical that Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert are the runner-ups that sold more than winners?? Fabulous. America loves the gays haha.

Considering this has been a week with NO airplay, I think that's outstanding. In January she will see radio play and do some more media which can only help. I'm encouraged.

This is a sin, just as Crystal coming in second to Lee was. Crystal's album is nothing short of a masterpiece, and I can't tell you how disappointed I am that it is not selling well. Why isn't 19/Jive doing anything to promote it? It should also be marketed as country/Americana, since that is the definite vibe of the CD. If they would distribute the "Farmer's Daughter" video to CMT and GAC, I'm sure that would boost sales of the album. To let this outstanding work by this phenomenal talent go to waste would be absolutely unforgiveable.

A masterpiece??? You've got to be joking!!! Maybe if she had done a rocksy folksy Janis/Bonnie Raitt style CD, it would have blown away the competition, but I don't see much to love about this first effort except her voice is still outstanding! I loved her on AI, and glad now I downloaded most of those studio versions because for me, this debut CD was a BIG disappointment.

In looking at the overall sales/downloads figures for Idol winners and runner-ups, we also have to consider that the industry's numbers in general have been steadily dropping from year to year.
Of course, there will always be some artists that are more successful than others but this is also a fact of reality we have to take into consideration when comparing them.
Katy Perry got to the #1 Billboard Top 100 with only 119,000 or so sold!

I'm hopeful that she will not suffer the same fate as Allison Iraheta are they kind of talent that Jive does not know how to handle.

The album is not exactly what I wished for. With that said, I supported Crystal all the way through Idol and I am not giving up on her. Now I vote with my money and I buy her albums. She will become a seasoned singer/songwriter in time. If you voted for her to be the winner of Idol, then in my mind you ought to support her first album and give her the chance to continue on. She needs very good first-album sales to get the chance to make a great second album.

I think both would have done better if their albums were released immediately after Idol and not months later. It's harder to sell albums now in general, they need to push it when people still remember who the kids on AI were.

I just bought her Farmer's Daughter today and love it. Wish she had more out will definitely buy it.

It just shows everyone what "talent" is all about. I've been watching AI for years and the last two winners (Kris Allen and Lee Dewyze) DID NOT deserve to win!!! Total BS!!!
