'24' movie in limbo after script gets 86'd

kiefer-sutherland5-24-320.jpgThe prospects for a "24" feature film have gotten a little darker with the rejection of a script for the movie.

A movie based on the FOX show, which ended in May after eight seasons, was in the works at 20th Century Fox. But Howard Gordon, who executive produced the series, now says that the studio has thrown out a script written by "State of Play" and "Shattered Glass" scribe Billy Ray.

"As far as I know, it is in suspended animation," Gordon tells EW. "There is talk about re-approaching it. I understand [director] Tony Scott is meeting with Kiefer [Sutherland] to talk about ideas."

The project is still alive -- "People are still talking about it," Gordon says -- but the setback means that at the very least, fans will have to wait a while longer to see Sutherland take up Jack Bauer again.

Gordon says he's "disappointed" that 20th Century Fox decided to toss out the script -- which would have flowed out of the events of the show's final season -- but he tells EW he still thinks the movie will get made.

"Anecdotally, I've heard from people who are really missing the show," he says, "and I do think there is more life in Jack Bauer."

I'm not surprised, they've better wait to get the right script. The movie is going to be BIG!

Let me guess. In the discarded script, there was a mole inside CTU, who caused havoc with Jack, but Jack saves the day just in time.

24 was a fairly exciting show when it first came out, but it devolved into formulaic drek pretty quickly.

It does indeed need a really great script, if it's to work. It has to do something the television series didn't -- tell a compelling story in two hours. It also needs to be bigger and better than the series; this is the big screen we're talking about.

So I don't blame 20th Century Fox for passing on a mediocre script (if that's what it was). It needs to be right.

i am a big 24 fan and as sad as i am that it is over and really hope the real time aspect is taken up in other tv shows and even movies

i don t want there to be a movie
for 2 big reasons

it will either be a 2 hour real time movie and although the tv movie sorta showed they can pull it off as far as a big screen movie to pay 10 dollars for and nothing to follow it up they would have to do so much in relatively little time and even get us to accept its real time ness when suff happens so fast seem more like a comedy

or the movie takes place for 24 hours but highlighted for 2 hours

which would be able to tell a whole story and seem somewhat believable however basically that's just making any other movie only difference is jack is the main character all though cool not really 24 like and do justice for the series now iam not one that cares if remakes or 100 direct to dvd movies or whatever movie sponging off of series etc get made as i can personally withdrawal myself and original series from it however people seem to dislike the original from that and stuff
and i would not want to see that to this show

u never know they might make the best adaptation ever but chances of that r slim

and 2 is imo the show ended pretty good one of the best endings for a tv show and really no need to make a movie of course just to make money and no one will go away happy just the studio

oh i forgot to mention that the script fox axed is probably best version of 24 movie script for fans and true to characters and series but fox didn't see or believe thats the best way to make money

i just hope if a movie is made its has the most key people who had o deal with the show and creating it and developing it

I want the movie to just have a plot that ISN'T limited to 24 hours or 2 hours real time. Yes, it's "24" but 24 is a franchise now and not just a real-time show anymore. The plot could have no set timeframes and it would still be great. Today, 24 isn't known as the "real-time show." It's known as the "Jack Bauer is a badass" show. So I don't think getting rid of the set timeframe will hurt the movie.

I wish NBC would have woken up and gave us a series finale to Las Vegas and at least the producer is trying to get something donw with 24 as GST tried with his show.

24 was finely tuned script, high production costs and enough action and suspense to keep you home on Monday nightly faithfully.

I appreciated the shows delivery of running the season straight, not the new shows, a few reruns, some new shows routine so often seen today.

While the time frame did require a creative suspension of reality at times, the overall story was all first class.

I heard that the script was dumped because they didn't have any vampires in it who resided in NJ with fake tans and puffed up hair
