'The Vampire Diaries' recap: Every Rose has its thorn

tvd-rose-car-320.jpgSorry, I couldn't resist with that headline. It's been a long day.

Tonight on "The Vampire Diaries," we finally met the highly anticipated Rose (Lauren Cohen), but the episode's real strength was found not in our new maybe-villain, but in the quiet, human moments between characters we already know and love. I cried... a whole lot, and now it's time to go through it all over again. Hold me?

8:01 - Vampires are such messy eaters. I mean, when we get a milkshake at a drive-thru, we don't dive into it face-first... there has to be a more delicate way to drain the guy you compelled to kidnap an injured teenage girl, right?

8:02 -
You're telling me that after a night like that, nobody checked on Elena? What was Jeremy doing all night, updating his LiveJournal? (Or working out. He looks like he was probably working out.)

8:03 -
Caroline describes Tyler's wolf-eyes as "gold with amber highlights." She's definitely been reading L.J. Smith books.

Damon feels a little bit "off" in this scene. What's with the 20 questions? And hardly a cutting remark in the bunch. Is he more shaken by stuffing Katherine into the vampire dumpster than we thought?

8:05 -
With all the supernatural goings-on and lycanthropy issues, it's easy to forget that  Tyler accidentally killed a friend. The hallway scenes are showing the very human ramifications of what happened in last week's episode, which is important, especially because we didn't know the girl very well. While the people around him mourn the loss of a teenager girl, Tyler is also mourning his humanity, and by the looks of it... that Lockwood temper is already climbing. He should probably take up surfing. Maybe yoga.

It's weird seeing Stefan at school. I almost figured he'd dropped the ruse. And again... I still can't believe it took these idiots this long to realize Elena - injured, traumatized, perpetually caught in a life-or-death situation Elena - was M.I.A.

8:06 -
It's cute how Elena thinks the guy who just dragged her into a strange house like a sack of potatoes is going to give a crap that she's hurt. I love her naivete. (Though, I'd be inclined to want believe that this guy isn't all bad. He's so cute, with his floppy I-used-to-be-in-Mandy-Moore-movies hair and his sexy accent.)

Finally, we meet the famous Rose! Considering the various similarities between "Supernatural" and "The Vampire Diaries" [shameless plug], Lauren Cohan fits right into the Mystic Falls universe, and she comes complete with a built-in creepy vibe and a short fuse.

8:10 - Stefan makes a good point. Why did he trust Damon to do away with Katherine?

8:11 - It's interesting to watch Tyler, the closed-off bully, slowly realize one by one that there are people around him who care about him.

8:12 - Okay, who is Elijah? Why is Rose scared of him? Why is Trevor happy to run from him? Why doesn't Elena just stay on the couch? Her bravery is her most endearing and most frustrating quality.

8:13 - The definition of trust: letting a witch slice your palm open so you drip delicious human blood all over your history classroom while a vampire keeps watch in the middle of the school day.

Uh-oh. Looks like that spell took a lot more out of Bonnie than she'd expected.

8:19 - Okay, so Tyler "Teen Wolf"ed it a little bit. I can definitely appreciate the basketball homage to the most ridiculous high-school werewolf ever. (If you haven't seen that movie, youngsters... see it. Educate yourselves on just how amazingly bad this could be.)

Meanwhile, the chemistry between Tyler and Caroline burns. Whether they ever hook up or not, I just can't wait to see them spend more time on screen together. Candice Accola and Michael Trevino were some seriously hidden gems. If every television show cast its peripheral characters so well, there would be no need for that obnoxious "look, five new people exactly our age just moved to town!" thing that every teen drama tends to do in Season 2.

8:22 - Brotherly road trip bonding! Whether Damon likes it or not! Look at all these meaningful glances and loaded pauses.

8:24 - Wow. First girl Jeremy's had on his bed in ages and all she does is pass out and bleed on his pillow. Kid can't catch a break.

8:24 - Ooh, new vampire mythology! Take out your notebooks, kids. The mysterious Elijah is one of "the originals" - not just any vampires, but the vampires. Elena is a Petrova doppelganger, and her blood is the key to breaking the curse.

8:30 - Seriously, Tyler and Caroline! I'm glad the truth is out, even if Tyler had to go all macho-violent psycho to make that happen. Yoga. Surfing. Xanax. Red wine. Pot. He needs to chill.

8:31 - So, Katherine is a doppelganger, too. Does she still count as a doppelganger, if she's a vampire? Could they just fetch her out of the tomb and use her blood to break the curse?

8:33 - The best thing about the new connection that Jeremy and Bonnie are forging is the way it brings out her vulnerable side. We get to see him be earnest and curious all the time, but seeing her really admit her weaknesses is rare. I think Bonnie became a bit prickly at the beginning of this season - she was hard to love, because she was so terrified and reactive all the time.

8:33 - Um, when Bonnie said she was going to send Elena a message, I thought it'd be just a vision or something. Not the actual piece of paper. If she can get that down without the whole bleeding and convulsing thing, it'd be a really great way to pass notes in class. Just saying.tvd-rose-elena.jpg

8:34 - Road trip bonding with an O-neg juicebox: Awww. I wonder how Damon really feels when Stefan admits that he's been taking tiny girly lady sips of Elena's blood. He's a rock. He's an island.

It's definitely time for a flashback to bloodthirsty, selfish Stefan. He sounds like a blast.

8:34 - I think Elijah might be more intimidating if he didn't look like he just came from having cocktails with Serena Van der Woodsen.

8:42 - It's worth noting how much clout one's word carries in the supernatural world. When Elijah says that Rose has his word, she believes him instantly. It's a little bit like the way that witches are compelled to repay their debts. There are certain standards and rules when it comes to loyalty and honor. Kind of like they're Winklevi. (They're gentlemen of Harvard!)

Ugh. Except really creepy. Poor Elena. Bet she wishes she was in AP Bio right about now.

8:44 - Okay, that whole head-swatting thing? That was gross. And SO COOL.

I can't believe that he just tossed her necklace aside like that! Is she going to get it back? I really don't need another piece of missing sentimental jewelry to obsess over. I wonder if he's built up a vervain tolerance or if the originals just don't have a sensitivity to it.

8:45 - I love how Stefan and Damon just buzz around the house like little gnats.

Vervain bombs away! How come he could grab her necklace without flinching ut that works?

8:48 - Oh, wow. When Elena looks like she's about to run to Damon but Stefan intercepts the pass -- that scene couldn't have been better played on the part of Dobrev and Somerhalder. There's something about Damon and Elena that gives the viewer the impression that they can read each others' minds a bit, the way you know what your oldest friend is thinking or the way that you can always find someone you care about in a crowded room.

Personally, the Damon/Elena/Stefan love triangle isn't why I watch the show. I'm not interested in choosing sides and I don't actually care who Elena "belongs" with. I'm in it for the ride, not the endgame -- and to see the way that their relationships build and burn over the next few years. I'm used to love triangles -- when I was a kid I waited with bated breath for the very last scene of the very last "Dawson's Creek" episode to find out who Joey Potter would end up with. I'd imagine that there's going to be a similar situation with "The Vampire Diaries" -- it'll come down to the last ten minutes of the series before we know how the cards fall here.

In the meantime, I'm enjoying the ups and downs, and right now, if that ride involves Elena pulling away from Stefan a bit to find strength within herself, I dig that.

8:50 - I was going to write something about Jeremy watching Bonnie sleep, but as soon as I saw them reunite with Elena, I stopped really caring about the whole potential romance thing. The strength of this show has always been and will always be in the friendships and the family bonds. I'm literally crying right now watching Jeremy hug his big sister. During most of this episode he was the big brave protector, and now, in a flash, he's somebody's little brother. I adore him.

8:51 - Damon looks really, really old in this scene. I don't mean that as an insult to Somerhalder - quite the opposite, actually. He looks worn down and exhausted. He just risked his life to save a girl he loves and then watched her seek comfort in his brother's arms, while he stood to the side, alone as ever. He's tired, and he's sad, and that's showing up on his face.

8:51 - Wow. It only took Stefan 145 years to apologize for "being the guy who made Damon turn."

Look, obviously, the blame is mostly in Katherine's hands, if you're going to lay blame. But there are two parts to the vampire equation: Katherine supplied part one, but it wouldn't have happened without Stefan's input. It's nice to see that acknowledged, though I'm not sure Damon is particularly owed an apology.

8:53 - Ooh, Caroline and Tyler having a monster mash nightcap. It's cool that Tyler feels hot - a wolf's body temperature is higher than a human's. I'm glad Caroline is keeping everyone's secret.

As always, Trevino kills it.

8:55 - Ooh, Klaus! In the books, he's the one who turned Katherine. I can't wait to meet the guy who is more badass than her. I have my doubts as to whether that's even possible.

8:57 - I sense a soundtrack junkie moment: Sleeperstar's "I Was Wrong"

Damon rescued the necklace! (See, Sam Winchester? That's how it's done. Jeez.)

Oh my God. Every single thing about this moment is perfect. The struggle of Damon's confession, the simplicity of the way he says it: I love you, plain and simple. But mostly, the fact that he's going to make her forget it in a moment. He says that he's being selfish, but this might be the most selfless thing we've ever seen him do.

Single perfect tear! Take that, Jensen Ackles. (I feel like this entire episode was a rebuttal to our "Supernatural" Debate club. Well played, "TVD." Well played.)

8:59 - Elijah is awake! Should've seen that coming. Don't mess with the O.G.

This was one of my all-time favorite episodes. I honestly believe this is the most underrated cast on television. The CW gets a bad rap. People make assumptions about sub-par writing and airhead models-turned-actors. "The Vampire Diaries" proves that great television -- and great performances -- can be found in the strangest of places.

MVP tonight goes, easily, to Ian Somerhalder. He's told me several times that it's rough on him to play Damon as vulnerable, but you couldn't tell by the way the guy basically filleted his own heart tonight. Brilliant.

Actually... let's watch that again. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

i knew i'd love this :)
DE scene was...perfect. Amazing episode overall also.Lots of new info.

Holy crap....I loved this episode!! Like you, I spent several minutes in tears and even rewatched the second half again immediately after I finished the first time. (yay for DVR!) I love the idea of the love triangle and how the relationships are growing and changing between the three. For me it makes the show all the more interesting and keeps me wondering.

I really liked both Stefan and Damon equally on this ep. Usually I end up favoring tortured Damon. I think his love for his brothers girl always gets me. But this time I also really enjoyed Stefan in his understanding of damons suffering. In the car, he didn't scoff at damons love for Elena - he simply acknowledged it and understood.

And the last scene simply stole my heart!! Definitely selfless since Damon took away her memory.

Your posts are always brilliant. I look forward to reading your recaps every thursday!

What I'm dreading is that break that the t.v. show will make. Like 2 months or so!? I hope it doesn't happen and they run the show for the full episodes.

Anyway, my heart SANK for Damon. I felt his feelings. I mean, couldn't Elena just gone over and gave him a hug as well?

Oh and also!!! It bothered me that the whole "resue Elena" scene was done in less than 10 minutes. They could of dragged it out a bit. Why didn't I cry? I was looking forward to the crying...

Damon filleted his heart along with millions of other ladies around the world. I thought the fight scene was a bit anticlimatic also. Was hoping it'd be another fight scene like the one they had with Katherine, but this was very short lived with very little action. Ending scene definitely killed it tonight and Ian just has a way with his magnificent blue eyes. The way in which he's able to convey so much emotion from those eyes has my heart swelling.

Ew @ the Jeremy/Bonnie storyline. So forced.

Another cracking episode! They're on a great run at the moment. I really felt for Damon, but like Carina, I'm on the fence as to the whole main love triangle, whoever Elena ends up with she ends up with, be it Stefan,Damon or whoever. And I dont watch the show just for the ships. Having said that, I'm still loving the connection Bonnie and Jeremy are having. Loved it last week, love it this week and will enjoy seeing where they take that. Rose is awesome, loving the new vamps in town already. I agree with 'K' and felt the fight scene was a little bit 'Meh', but I guess they were saving the killer scene for the 'one tear man-cry' at the end. Love the show more and more each episode, I personally feel that there isn't a weak character amongst the whole cast, and the best thing about it is that they dont drag storylines out, they keep it moving which really keeps us on our toes each week. Bring on Katerina!

A) favouriting this page so I can watch and re-watch this clip.
B) why is this show so amazing? How do they keep it up every week? I'm fascinated by the minds and creativity of Kevin and Julie every week.

The Bonnie Jeremy thing felt a bit too forced for me this episode. We know which road they're going down. But I loved their emotional support for each other. It was nice to see Bonnie acknowledging her weaknesses and vulnerabilities. And nice to see Jeremy being the one giving the support. I loved him this episode. Though I was a bit disturbed by the creepy brother-sister hug at the end...
I love love love Damon and Stefan this episode. Brother bonding roadtrip is exactly what they needed. I'm happy that Stefan is passed that whole jealousy thing from last season. And i love that they can both acknowledge and live with the fact that they love the same girl. Their tag team take down of Elijah was do fun to watch! Damon whispering "down here" was hilarious- I can only imagine how much fun he was having in his kick-***-save-my-girl moment.
The bedroom scene was well played by Damon. As was the look on his face seeing elena post vamp kill. He looked a knight who just rescued the princess. And he mouthed "you're welcome" so perfectly! (Elena was running to him damn it! I resented Stefan a bit for intercepting. Why does he have to be so caring and perfect all the time? Sigh). Ian rocked it this ep; even made me cry. I felt my own heart aching. I love vulnerable Damon, but something tells me that we won't be seeing him for a while. Not after all this...
A few questions though:
-Jeremy and Elena aren't blood related. Why does the map thing work?
-how did they not think of burning elijah's body? Come on Salvatore's- keep your heads in the game!
-why did I miss Katherine this episode? She could have totally helped them kick ***.
-did no one feel the need to help Elena home? She wants to spend time with Jeremy, yes, but carry her to her bed and be on your way. She has two strapping vamps at her service.

Quote:

-Jeremy and Elena aren't blood related. Why does the map thing work?

Yes, they are related; both are Gilberts by blood. Elena only got half of her heritage from Isobel Flemming (descendant of the Pierce/Petrova clan). The other half of her DNA is from John Gilbert, Elena's real father and Jeremy's uncle.

OMG!!!
