'The Event': Thomas phone home
Say this for the last new episode of "The Event" for three months: The two big developments at the end of the episode weren't ones we exactly saw coming. The twin revelations that Thomas wasn't planning an attack on the United States (at least not directly) and of the reason why Dempsey was after Leila and her little sister gave the show a nice note on which to go out. But they were more "Hmm" than "Whoa!" as these things go, and while they worked, it's hard to say whether they worked well enough to keep fans on the hook until late February.
That the show won't be back until then is not "The Event's" fault, of course, and if it were coming back sooner, then this would have been a fine bit of teasing to tide us over till, say, mid-January. But that's not what's happening, and NBC's decision to hold off longer could end up hurting the show.
So, about those two revelations. Midway though the episode I wrote the following in my notes: "This nuke is going to launch at the fade to black, isn't it?" That the show chose not to do that -- and that it wasn't a nuclear missile Thomas launched after all -- is a big plus to its credit. The question now is why Thomas and Isobel were being so secretive about their plans with Sophia.
Is he transmitting a homing beacon, a distress signal or a call to arms into space, and regardless of which it is (or if it's something else altogether), why is that something that needs to be hidden from Sophia? She wants to return to wherever it is they came from, but is that necessarily mutually exclusive from what Thomas is doing -- especially since they don't quite have the technology here on Earth to make it happen?
As for the other big moment, seeing that Michael Buchanan hasn't aged in 50-plus years answers a couple questions while raising others. We now know why Dempsey has been kidnapping little girls -- they're the daughters of sleepers, and he's using them somehow to supply his young-making coffee additive. It makes them age prematurely, as does whatever was in the syringe Sean injected into Dempsey's goon.
Now that we know -- or at least can very strongly assume -- that Michael is an EBE too, it does explain how he was so certain that the helicopters that came for the Avias passengers weren't friendly. What it doesn't explain is Crazy Journalist Lady's info-dump to Sean and Leila about Michael's Mt. Inostranka research. Mostly likely Michael was just lying about having seen the facility from the air a couple years back, but that's an odd red herring to throw in.
It does seem to mean, though, that unless Leila's mom is also an alien, that humans and the EBEs can procreate, and the resulting offspring are different -- at least different enough for Dempsey to want to round them up and experiment on them.
Again, if these questions were going to be answered in a couple weeks, or even a little more than a month from now, we'd be more sanguine about where "The Event" was headed. This was a pretty solid episode, one of the better ones it's done in recent weeks. But the fact that we won't find anything out until three months from now takes away from its impact some, and that's a shame.
What did you think of this week's "Event"? Will you be back come February?

I think NBC is try to tank the show like they have done with so many in the past. I don't think we will see it on next seasons line up.
Yeah - I'll be back in Feb though most people probably won't be.
I thought the launch of the satellite was excellently done -- we were all set up for a bombing somewhere, and watching those watching and waiting for the explosion, only to be relieved that it wasn't, then horrified to realize it is transmitting -- loved it, and I was carried right along with the others.
I'm feeling a little jerked around by the Buchanan storyline, though, like maybe the writers decided on that just recently after starting to go another way, though I may be wrong. I don't understand why Dempsey needs specifically seven year old girls, but maybe that will be explained.
Yes, I'll be watching for the show in Feb., though I hate such a long hiatus.
I will definitely be back and I hope I'm not alone. I hate NBC!
Barbara-did they say it was just 7-year girls? I know its obviously just girls but I didnt remember them saying 7-years old. And maybe its not because they want Leila too. Maybe its just girls older than 7.
It would make more sense that Leila's mother wasnt not EBE but she looked really young too. She had to be with the Dad over 20 years based on Leila's age so you would think she realized he wasnt aging. Unless he told her the truth. I guess well have to wait and see.
I for one was shocked that Leilas dad was an EBE I was thinking all along that maybe one of seans parents were since he is so smart and we havent seen them yet.
i will be back b/c i need to know wth is gonna happen next. lol
I was surprised to find out about Michael Buchanan, since all this time I thought Sean was the alien offspring. Besides being extremely smart, he swims and runs like a fiend! Then there was the whole thing about being estranged from his parents.
I'll be there in February, waiting for more clues. I hope NBC hasn't blown it.
I think's it clear that Michael is the EBE and the mom was human. Leila is totally unaware of what she is until now, and, as such, must have aged normally (like Samantha), otherwise she'd have her own questions.
They said that the kidnapped girls were all 7-8 years of age, so the age seemed significant ... at least until Leila became a target. Could be that because Samantha was responding to treatments "better than expected" that Leila was targeted for treatment.
superhero show The Cape replaces The Event for a few weeks and by the previews I've seen for The Cape, I am going to love this show much more and if The Cape snags more than six million viewers a week The Event may just be unEventful .
i think the cape looks stupid...so im sure it will be a great success...anything where you need half a brain gets canceled.
Im not U.S. Citizen and here in EU channels are paying for CR to air the shows and i really cant understand why U.S. channels doing this things with "Stop" and "Start" the shows all the time!!!!Its ridiculous! How you expect to get more views when the ones you already have will forget what happen before three months!!Lame decisions...
About the show now,i believe Michael story line shows whats happening. The "private company" knows of course somehow about the EBEs and the assassination attack was planned by them and used EBE to set them up.
Its a great show witch sadly created in a pathetic channel...
