'American Idol' shifts to Wednesday-Thursday schedule for Season 10

american-idol-judges-320.jpgThe changes just keep coming for "American Idol."

FOX's top-rated series, which has aired on Tuesday and Wednesday nights for most of its life, will switch to Wednesdays and Thursdays this season. The move also means a number of other shakeups in the network's midseason schedule.

The "Idol" move will give "Human Target" and "Bones" new timeslots on Wednesday and Thursday nights, push "Fringe" into the dead zone of Fridays and, FOX hopes, serve as a launching pad for its new comedy "Breaking In" later in the spring. It's also an acknowledgment that "Glee" is doing well enough on its own on Tuesday nights that it no longer needs "Idol's" help in the ratings.

"Fringe" is probably the biggest loser in the shakeup. The show finishes fourth in its current Thursday timeslot, averaging around 5 million viewers per week. It gets one of the biggest bumps, percentage-wise, of any show on TV when DVR viewing is factored in, but it's likely to lose some audience at least in the overnight ratings with the move to Fridays. It will be paired with "Kitchen Nightmares."

"Bones," meanwhile, is likely to get a bit of a bump when it moves to 9 p.m. Thursdays behind "Idol." "Human Target" may as well, but it won't have much time to show itself. The network is running back-to-back episodes on Jan. 5 and 12, and after "Idol's" two-hour January premiere on Jan. 19, "Human Target" will have only three weeks with an "Idol" lead-in before going off the schedule again.

The new shows in FOX's midseason lineup are a pair of live-action comedies, "Mixed Signals" (which premieres at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8) and "Breaking In" (9:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 6), animated comedy "Bob's Burgers" (8:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9) and crime drama "The Chicago Code" (9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7).

The schedule shift for "Idol" is the latest in a series of big changes for Season 10. The show has two new judges (Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler) and is tweaking its format by, among other things, skipping the Top 24 stage and going straight to a Top 12.

Here's how FOX's midseason schedule will shake out (no changes to Saturday nights):

9 p.m. "Lie to Me" (through Jan. 31)/"The Chicago Code" (premieres Feb. 7)

This is horrible news for FRINGE... That time slot is where you put shows to die! BAH! I am so frustrated. FRINGE is one of the best shows on TV. I HATE YOU FOX.

My DVR is already at max recording capacity on Wednesday and Thursday. American Idol, have a nice life. You've officially been dropped by my household.

A I needs to go off the air! the show is not good, never really has been. What is happening with Running Wilde?

How the hell can one follow these kinds of schedules?

No more Idol for me--my DVR is running overtime as it is!! Thursday is jam packed enough and I like what I watch. No more room for Idol!

FOX fans will still tune in especially with the new judges.

Poor Fringe. Moved to Friday Death Slot. And opposite Supernatural.
At least Bones gets a good lead-in.

I agree with everyone else; my DVR is already overloaded on those days, so definitely not planning to watch AI this season. Probably wouldn't have anyway as I quit out of boredom not long into last season (and that after years of loyal viewership). Oh well; at least I won't really miss it...

Not really happy about the Bones move either. Glad one of my faves will get a (supposed) bump in the ratings, but I already have other favorites in that timeslot. So, something will have to give or be watched online. Ah, why is it some nights are empty and other overloaded with good shows? So uneven.

Quit your crying and get a better DVR. Learn to adjust that's life.

"Getting a better DVR" isn't an option for everyone. DirecTV doesn't offer one and I live in the boondocks. Satellite is a must and Dish Network is a joke. So, no AI for me. It's not that disappointing though. Last season was the first I watched the show since season three and what a colossal waste of a season it ended up being.
