'Supernatural's' Sam sans soul: What's next?

spn-jared-truth.jpgTonight's Oct. 29 episode of "Supernatural" promised brutal honesty, and it actually delivered answers to some of our questions.

The Goddess of Truth, Veritas, could compel anyone to tell the truth, but she had no power over Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki). It's not the first time Sam has been immune to a supernatural force. He couldn't contract the Croatoan virus, and Andy's mind control didn't work on him in Season 2.

This time, his resistance had nothing to do with the Yellow-Eyed Demon or Sam's connection to Lucifer -- as far as we know. Sam's panicked admission to Dean that he hasn't had emotions since returning from hell came as little shock to longtime viewers, but it was still momentous to hear him actually say it.

Dean (Jensen Ackles) confronts Sam about not attempting to save Dean from being turned into a vampire. He points out all of the risks - Dean's life was in the balance, as were Ben's and Lisa's.

"That should stop me cold," Sam replies. "But I just don't feel it. Ever since I came back I am a better hunter than I've ever been. Nothing scares me anymore, because I can't feel it. I don't know what's wrong with me. I think I need help."

His cry for help may or may not have been genuine, but Dean had had enough. When the episode ended, Dean had beat his brother more or less to a bloody pulp. Payback for the times Sam -- fueled by demon blood or possessed by Lucifer -- rearranged Dean's face?

Probably not. Dean now has Sam in a position to get some answers, and it looks like when the show returns on Friday, Castiel will help him to discover that when Sam came back from hell, he did it without a soul. Unfortunately, Castiel's method of reading a person's soul -- which we saw him use on a young boy earlier this season -- isn't exactly pleasant.

So what does it mean that Sam's soulless? He obviously has all of his memories intact, and he knows the things he's supposed to feel... he just doesn't feel them. When he saw Dean for the first time in this season's premiere, he said all the right things. "I get to see you again," he said, and later, "I guess I just wish you were coming... it's just better with you around, that's all."

He said all the right things -- but there was no emotion behind his words. Now we know why.

So where, exactly, is Sam's soul? We'll find out. The angel Balthazar reminded us this season that souls have worth in Hell and in Heaven. "In this economy? It's probably the only thing worth buying," he said. "Do you have any idea what souls are worth? What power they hold?"

Sam has been "special" since the pilot episode -- there's always been something about him that makes him demon-bait, just as there's been something about Dean that makes him important to the angels. Maybe whatever made Sam unique is in his soul, and that "power" is what made his soul worthy of stealing.

The real question is: with the help of Dean and Castiel, will Sam be able to get his soul back? Or is he destined for a life of well-intentioned sociopathy?

Those are my thoughts -- so check out the teaser for next week's episode below, and then chime in with your own theories in the comments. Are you counting down the days until next Friday?

loved tonights episode and I think this is a good twist! Makes me hate Sam a little less now. :) Okay... so I never hated Sam, but I've been wayyy more Team Dean this season than I have ever been. Here's to hoping Sam gets his soul back, and soon!

Not that I haven't been enjoying the episodes so far this season, but this one really up the ante. It was an awesome episode. It had me covering my eyes, but not in horror of the deaths, but in horror of the confrontation between Sam and Dean. It made me wonder if I could handle the truth. And it had me questioning what the truth actually is.

And I'm glad that we are starting to get some answers. And from the looks of next week's teaser, we might get a few more.

And as much as I love Sam (even though he is currently without a soul), he totally had that beat down from Dean coming.

I think what has been throwing people off this season is that our beloved Sammy is so different! No matter what happened to Sam or Dean, Sam has always had the puppy dog eyes and the big heart. Even when he was drinking the demon blood season 4 we were still on his side. Now to know that he doesn't have a soul makes it that heart wrenching for me.

This episode was fantastic and I loved the little glimmer of old Dean when he was in the bar with the woman and her newly purchased *******. I'm even more excited now to see how they solve this problem :)

In true Supernatural fashion, we got answers and a whole lot of new questions. How did his soul get "removed?" Who did it? Where is it? How do they get it back?

Selling his soul to get out of the pit doesn't make sense to me. Soul selling deals are payable on death. In a cage designed to contain the most powerful creatures we've seen in the Supernatural mythology, I don't think anything could even get in there to make the deal.

Was his soul stripped from him by the process of pulling him out of the cage? That could be the worst case scenario. Sam's soul trapped in a cage with Michael and Lucifer for over 100 years? If that's the case, when we get Sammy back, he would be so utterly shattered no one could recognize him.

My current theory de jure involved the flash of the man we saw in next week's preview, the man with the plan that Sam would be his greatest weapon as he has no soul.

My first thought was "Oh holy crap! Its the vampire alpha!" After, I think its Raphael. He would know that Sam dragged Lucifer into the pit. He would know that Sam, Dean and Castiel thwarted his plans. A soulless Sam would be the perfect "weapon" against Cas and Dean. The remaining questions are "How did he do it?" and "How do they get it back?"

In all, this season has been amazing. Creatively, what we've seen so far is superior to seasons past. The acting is off the charts. The technical aspects of the show are superb. And the story? Is gut wrenching/infuriating/heart breaking.

My sincerest hope is that we have Sam back soon. I personally watch primarily because i love the heroes, the brothers, the team. In my opinion, we don't have that team. In a few episodes, the writers have set up a damned impressive arc for the season. We need Dean AND Sam to tackle it.

Here's hoping we have our Sammy back well before the winter hiatus.

I believe the word is "sociopathos."

Every time one of the brothers “died” the other would make a deal at the crossroads for the other, but if someone has the soul and can’t be replaced~they can’t make a deal.

I think to stop this round-a-bout game of soul saving the Trickster took the soul for safe keeping. Because now Lucifer wouldn’t want Sam’s body without the powerful soul and they won’t be chasing him either.

And it will be up to the love of John & Mary to return to help bring it back.

I have been a true fan of this show since the beginning, but I am really getting tired of it always being each season the fight between the brothers. I would like just one season in which, after they both gave the ultimate sacrifice, they just get along and do the job. I love their dysfunctional but loving relationship when they flip quips at each other and just kill bad things. Enough soul searching and fixing them. With that said, this was a great episode with smart dialogue. No matter what they do to the show, I'll always be hooked! I am gonna miss it when it ends!

I love supernatural I watch every Friday and now I can't wait to see who has Sammy's soul.I hope they don't end with Sam and Dean trying to kill each other.

I'm actually REALLY excited by this. The only thing I DO NOT WANT is Sam to be soulless all season. I feel like we haven't had Sam and Dean as regular Sam and Dean in two seasons--first Dead was traumatized from hell and Sam was addicted to demon blood, then they were vessel and disagreed and... I like this story line, as long as we get a significant amount of the season with both Sam and Dean being Sam and Dean. Like they said, a man without a soul isn't a man.

Do you reckon he has partly been turned into a demon? thats what happens in hell maybe he is in the transition period of a humans soul being twisted into a demons.
