'Smallville': I'm no Superman -- oh, wait
Several satisfying blasts from the past, a tantalizing look into the future and a huge moment in the present: "Smallville" packed an awful lot of development into its 200th episode. And for the story the show needs to tell between now and the end of the series, it worked quite well. We're going to discuss some of the big elements in the episode, but we're also going to let showrunners Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson have their say too. When they screened the 200th episode for reporters last week, they gave us several insights into the events of "Homecoming," which we can share now that the episode has aired.
It gets spoilery starting with the next paragraph, so be forewarned.
All the time travel (courtesy of Brainiac 5) that occurred tonight was to show Clark that, despite Jor-El's consistent and continuous badmouthing, he really is destined to be Earth's protector. We even see a lightning-fast glimpse of Future Clark in the familiar red-and-blue suit in 2017, so we know -- and Clark now knows too -- that he has what it takes.
Equally important, though, was the trip to Clark's past and him finally being able to let go of blaming himself for Jonathan Kent's death. That's been haunting him for half the series now, and his burying of the watch at his dad's grave was a nice way to symbolize his moving forward. It was also pretty cool to see the show give Clark his epiphany now rather than right at the end of the series. Peterson explains why:
"We really wanted this to be a positive season of growth and forward movement," he says. "So if it happened that late in the season, it felt like you're just getting that at the very last second before his big move into [being] Superman. We really wanted it to launch this season, not just cap it off."
And how cool, by the way, was the look at Clark in the future, sporting the classic secret-identity look of slicked-back hair, buttoned-up suit and glasses? We're not ashamed to say it sent our fanboy and -girl hearts aflutter a little bit. (Also? Peterson says there's a "very good possibility" we'll see that version of Clark again before the series ends.)
The callback to Chloe and the Wall of Weird was welcome too -- especially because it set up her text-message contact with the new Torch kids at the end of the episode. And take heart, Allison Mack fans: Souders says the show is "gearing up to see her again," although she wouldn't say exactly when.
And, of course, there's the moment in the barn. The huge, romantic, "I love you," literally-floating-on-air moment with Clark and Lois. Not sure there's much more to add than that (and we suspect you have plenty of your own thoughts), but we really like where it leaves Clark and Lois and how it potentially sets up the rest of the season.
What about you? Did "Smallville's" 200th satisfy you, and are you excited to see where it goes from here?

Great great episode, a tearbringer in a good way. Of the various movie and tv episodes that came to mind, the foremost was the Buffy prom episode. It's a wonderful life isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives...
Just one word: EPIC
This was an Epic episode! Thus far this is my favorite episode! I'm still hovering...
Greatest episode ever!!!!!!!!
That was pretty great. Just seeing Clark/Lana's meeting, Chloe in the Torch... man memories for everyone (past, present, and future.) Smallville really is going out on a high note, and from the way things have been moving thus far, it's shaping up to be a great ending... or new beginning.
Truly, best Smallville episode ever. And that being the fact, it tells us a bit about what we really want to see in the show ;-)
It was Super. It was great to see Clark move more towards the man he is to become.
