'Modern Family' receives honor at GLSEN Respect Awards

"Modern Family" can make room for another trophy next to its Peabody and its "best comedy" Emmy. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) honored the ABC sitcom, at its annual Respect Awards in Los Angeles, for portraying a diverse American family.

Zap2it caught up with "Modern Family" star Sofía Vergara and her TV son Rico Rodriguez at the ceremony, and they were both thrilled to be representing the show.

"It's a great cause, and I think it's fantastic for 'Modern Family' to be honored," says Vergara. "We're having such a great time and having so much success, and, on top of that, to be setting a good example, it's perfect."

Given recent headlines about gay and question children taking their own lives -- Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson just completed their own "It Gets Better" PSA -- bullying was particularly relevant topic for the series younger cast members.

"I've never been bullied, and I hope I never do," says Rodriguez, who plays Manny. "I think this is good because you can help raise awareness and help stop it."
