'Castle': Apparently America can't tell the difference between Esposito and Ryan
You may think Detectives Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Esposito (Jon Huertas) would be easily distinguished from one another -- what with differing ages, ethnicities and the fact that they're completely different characters -- but you'd be wrong.
Some "Castle" viewers are having trouble telling the two apart.
Zap2it met with both Dever and Huertas on the set of the show, and when the subject of Ryan's slick, new Season 3 wardrobe came up, Dever had a surprising explanation.
"For a long time, believe it or not, the audience, or a certain segment of them, confuses Ryan and Esposito," says Dever.
"I don't believe the audience would ever do that," Huertas chimes in.
"Someone is entirely worried that they're going to confuse the two of us," Dever insists. "We have a different costume designer, so things are a little bit snappier for us."
That new costume designer is Luke Reichle, who joins "Castle" after previously working on "Scoundrels," "Without a Trace," and "The Forgotten." And though we really don't think anyone needs sartorial assistance to tell the two apart, the cast's new looks this season are unmistakable.
"It's defining our roles a little bit more. They want me slim and neat and [Esposito] sort of baggy and messy," Dever says, turning to his co-star. "What's he going for?"
The two, whose off-screen bromance mirrors their characters', proceeded to compare boots for several moments before finally dropping the matter.

Excellent use of sartorial!
I love these two, but I hope they don't do the baggy look for Esposito. He's supposed to be ex-special forces. Dude has awesome muscle groups that need to be shown off. Also, if he wants to start wooing Laney, he's going to need to step up his game.
I just love Castle! Besides Richard Castle, "Ryan" is my fave character.Just looked him up in IMDB and he has great blue eyes!
Ahhh America...could you get any dumber? I guess if Sharron Angle things Asians look Mexican than this isnt as stupid as it sounds...Wait, yes it is. Idiots.
Well, people mix up Mulder and Scully and Booth and Bones, so I guess I'm not surprised some would confuse Ryan and Esposito. Not the deep end of the gene pool. I agree, baggy is not the way to go for Esposito. Either way, they both should look sharp, two cute dudes.
Well did you know that Seamus Dever was on General Hospital.
He played a doctor/hitman and
he shot Sonny's son.. it is so
weird to see him on this show..
Love the pair together they make
a good teamm
How on earth could anyone confuse these two they are so very different and failsauce to the baggy look for Esposito. More jeans and tight polo shirts for them both please :)
I used to get them confused all the time, and there's a very simple explanation as to why--I'm a casual observer of the show who doesn't care about those two characters. I would imagine this is true for a lot of people. Most viewers of shows aren't true fans, just casual fans. There was a joke on The West Wing before about how nobody could tell apart the white and asian guest characters who worked with Josh or Sam. They looked nothing alike, it's just that no one really paid much attention to them. I think the same thing is going on here.
People confuse them for the simple fact that both are severely underwritten characters. They're little more than waiters serving up the clues that would be too boring for Castle and Becket to find. This entire show is lazy in the writing department, and I have to question why people who still watch this mediocre piece of entertainment are questioning the intelligence of others whose confusion is a direct reflection of this show's rampant flaws.
