'Caprica' gets the ax at Syfy

caprica-320.jpg"Caprica" is done at Syfy.

The cable channel announced Wednesday (Oct. 27) that it's pulling the "Battlestar Galactica" spinoff from its schedule effective immediately. The remaining five episodes will eventually see the light of day, at least: Syfy says they'll air sometime early next year, but there's no chance for a second season.

"We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for 'Caprica' and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series," says Mark Stern, head of original programming for Syfy. "Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, 'Caprica' has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season."

The show has struggled since beginning the second half of its first season on Oct. 5. None of its first three episodes back reached the 1 million-viewer mark (figures for Tuesday's episode aren't available).

Speculation about the show's fate picked up last week when Syfy announced it was developing another "Battlestar" prequel called "Blood and Chrome." Syfy hasn't decided yet what will fill in for "Caprica" on Tuesday nights.

First it is hard to maintain continuity when there is a six month hiatus in the middle of the season. Second, moving the show from what is essentially a week end night to the middle of the week, where it competes with people in bed or getting ready for bed plus the local news will lower the audience numbers. Most important if Alessandra Torresani is not on screen most of the time why bother watching.

I have to agree that taking a six month hiatus in the middle of the first season was not a great idea. I really liked the show, and even I almost didn't bother to start watching it again when the season restarted. That is an awfully long time to pause a series that is still trying to find its stride. That is the point at which Caprica was really cancelled. The current announcement is merely the formality of making it official.

The idea of splitting the season like that is definitely a contributing factor, I think. Plus I don't know if a lot of SyFy's target audience actually got what Caprica was all about. They wanted more BSG-like action, and instead got a family drama, essentially, with the occasional Cylon tossed into the mix. That, and the negative, Enterprise-like response to the BSG finale that alienated much of the audience, makes me believe Caprica was Dead Show Walking anyway, as is the proposed new BSG spinoff.

So sad, Caprica was getting really good. the problem was the first half of the season was too slow just so they could develop all the characters... and now thats it's getting good they go and cancel it....

also.. more advertising woulda been REALLY helpful.. i didn't even know it was on until the third episode aired.

The SyFy channel needs to stop with the BSG prequels. There is not enough interest, deal with it and move on.

re-invest in invasion and surface two shows that need to come back!!!

Maybe if they'd stop the moronic scheduling (months and months of hiatus in the middle of a season; moving a show that was traditionally watched on Friday to mid-week against strong network competition), the show would have done better. But then again, this network is part of the NBC family, and there hasn't been a whole lot of intelligent schedule management there in a LONG time.

Ill-conceived from the get-go. Some good work done, especially by the effects team, but I won't miss this show.

Can we now begin to question the genius that is Ron Moore?

Wait .. they cancelled Caprica BEFORE SGFU??
