'Brothers & Sisters': Rebecca's out

Well, after all the hoopla over the news of her leaving the series, Emily VanCamp said her goodbyes in tonight's (Oct. 17) "Brothers & Sisters." As we mentioned in our preview post, we thought the writers and producers did an excellent job of letting her go.

Rebecca and Nora: This scene was really the most pivotal in making Rebecca's departure believable. If Nora (Sally Field) weren't the person she is today, then we don't think Rebecca would have been able to leave. After years of fighting, she has pushed aside all the anger she felt at Holly (Patricia Wettig) and has become a really caring friend. If anything, Rebecca can be assured that, aside from her father, Holly has other people who care about her.

Also, it was so smart of the writers to see that while there's a huge age difference between Nora and Rebecca, they have a lot in common.

Nora gave her life to her children and her husband, giving up her own desires and ambitions. Now years later, she's on a path to discover who she is outside of mother and wife. In turn, she released Rebecca from making that same mistake when she told her she should do what's right for her.

Rebecca and Holly: Originally when Holly's amnesia was leaked, we all made jokes about it being easy to write Rebecca out when her mother couldn't even remember her. After watching the episode, the writers didn't take the easy way out. Instead, they made Rebecca's choice so much harder. Oh, Holly remembers Rebecca now, but she just can't manufacture feelings for her. Ouch. How amazingly hurtful for Rebecca to know that her presence can be harmful to her mother's mental health and that her mother had no feelings for her? Some of you may believe that made her choice easier, but we think the thought of it would be terribly difficult to live with.

Rebecca and Justin: We already believed that Rebecca had every reason to divorce Justin (Dave Annable). Imagine your husband leaving you after just three months of marriage and after all that it took to get to that point. If you believe the end justifies the means and Justin's current wellbeing meant that he made the right decision, that makes sense, too. But then you'll have to extend the same reasoning to Rebecca's choice to pursue her own wellbeing. In the end, that's what Justin did. And it doesn't seem like there's any love lost between the two, but relationships in real life (as in TV) aren't always black and white, are they?

And here's where we get all cheese-tastic and post a fan montage of Justin and Rebecca. Feel free to skip this part and go straight to the comment-inducing question below!

While we'll miss Emily VanCamp and we look forward to her next role, we're okay with how her character said goodbye. Are you?

I am so sad Rebecca left the show! I loved her & Justin together and it's going to be hard to see him with anyone else in the future. I cried my eyes out this episode BUT, I am ok with how the show ended it. I don't know her reasonings for leaving the show, but I sure hope she comes back!

I understand her leaving, BUT it seem like it would've been good/ideal if he went with her. They really loved each other and seemed good together.

I was very moved by tonights "goodbye" I love Justin and Rebecca's and the relationship that grew between them and thought that it would withstand anything...even each of them following their own dreams, that they would support each other..and that the writers would have written that into the script, relationships are hard but the love the developed between the two of them came the hard way...and in today's world I would have liked to have seen them get through this, and Justin go with her. I am tired of relationships NOT working and caving in. Their relationship was built on truth, communication and so many emotions that make a solid base. Supporting each other, well, I will miss Rebecca and Justin... together....It would be nice if she could be written back into the script....they were a big part of why I tuned in every sunday!!!

This episode was the first time I gave a crap about Rebbecca since Season Two.

A bit sad, which is surprising.

Definitely will not Justin and Rebbecca as a couple. Back when they were "Siblings" they had good chemistry. But starting with season 3- that relationship was ruined. Every other episode they were breaking up, making up, fighting, screaming, Rebbecca whined constantly- it just was awful. Nice to see how they ended it- actually made me care a little about the character.

Good Episode. The premiere was good. Episodes 2 and 3 were weak- hopefully it will keep this momentum.

And with Kitty- I DO NOT like this storyline. I want to see Kitty grieving, with her family there to support her...not this BS. Nice to see she actually acknowledged the death of her husband in this episode.

I'll miss rebecca and emily's portrayal of her. She's always been one of my favorite characters on the show and her love story with justin was always great..never imagined what the show would be without her, but now I guess we'll have to see..I'm hoping at some point in the future rebecca could return, along with tommy and julia..

I found the character of Rebecca and Emily's portrayal of her to be too much like the character she played on Everwood. Too whiney and always arguing....and it didn't matter who the person was, she argued with them. I won't miss her. Now if they'd only stop pushing a man into Kitty's life - she's still grieving and needs to be at peace with herself before she can jump into a relationship. I want to see more of Nora and her journey to finding herself after all these years....of course the title of the show is Brothers & Sisters!! It would be nice if Tommy came back into the fold.

I think the way Rebecca left was perfect. I didn't want her to leave and they certainly left it so she can come back. We shall see.

I never liked Justin or Ephram. Both immature twits. Maybe now she'll find someone worthwhile.

Loved Emily VanCamp on Everwood, and I was excited that she was cast on Brothers and Sisters, but not enough to watch the show. I am glad her stint on the program was well-received and successful.
I hope that the next program she is cast in is something I am interested in watching - maybe she could join the cast of TERRA NOVA if not all the roles are filled yet for that show?

I'm sad at Rebecca leaving Justin. The two of them were the reason I tuned into the show. They had such a believable, touching storyline. I would have thought they could withstand the challenges they were faced with as a couple. The other couples on the show bore me and I find that I often fast-forward through their scenes. The only character that would possibly keep me watching after this episode is Nora. I certainly hope they bring back Rebecca and Justin together sometime in the future, before too long.
