'30 Rock's' Kelsey Grammer preview: Tossed salads and scrambled ice cream cakes

"30 Rock" continues its love fest for NBC stars of yore with a cameo by Kelsey Grammer on the Oct. 21 episode, "Reaganing."

The episode title might have something to do with Jack's (Alec Baldwin) lucky streak, which involves succeeding at everything he does. (Donaghy would totally make a verb out of 40th president.) Anyways, he tries to transfer his positive vibes to Liz (Tina Fey), who's trying to figure things out with Carol (Matt Damon).

Grammar enters the picture as himself, a "TGS" guest, who Jenna (Jane Krakowski) and Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) approach about a grift:

So what exactly are they enlisting him in? All we can say is that it involves ice cream cakes and disturbing Cookie Puss references:

I just hope they never do another live show again! Don't get me wrong -- the acting was excellent and I'm glad the actors got to have a fun change of pace.

But I still hope this was a one-time stunt as the look of the show was horrible! No outdoor scenes, the cheap imitation sets (obviously they couldn't use the real, much more detailed Silver Cup Studios sets with the wonderful brightly-lit "outdoor" scenes visible through the windows), etc.

All in all, it wasn't so much an episode of "30 Rock" as a live imitation, an extended SNL-type skit.

(I wanted to post the above last Thursday night, but apparently zap2it doesn't do recaps of this show any more.)

CASEY: "It wasn't hilarious or anything, some good moments here and there. There was really no need for the audience to be there; it just felt like an episode of 'SNL'."

JASON: "The episode, as a whole, wasn't real funny."

ADRIAN: "don't necessarily want them to do more such LIVE shows. I liked it the way it was (not live) a lot more."

Glad to hear some voices of reason after all the hype!

APRESSKI: "I'd forgotten how different the show looks when its not on tape."

It's normally filmed (single camera shot over several days), not taped (multiple video cameras done almost live). HUGE difference in the look (and feel) of the show.

Not only was tonight's Reaganing/Grifting episode very funny and perceptive, it looked great!!! Classic "30 Rock" is back -- yeah!

I miss Frasier! 8-(
