'Top Chef': Singapore slinging hash

top-chef-dc-singapore-01-finale-320.jpgWe're done licking our wounds from the loss of Tiffany last episode, and ready to move forward now that "Top Chef" is holding its finale in Singapore.

You can read the full recap with all the details here on Zap2it, but we just wanted to chew the fat in a meandering way on what was an exciting but somewhat unsatisfying episode, mainly because of Ed's attitude.

At this point, we're not really thrilled with the Final Four contestants for various personality reasons, but at least they can all cook. Our absolute adoration of Asian cuisine makes us admittedly biased toward Angelo. Yeah, we had to get over his personality quirks from earlier on, but his passion for what he does is apparent.

Having the finale in Singapore is brilliant. "Top Chef" fans are no doubt a worldly bunch, and we're so psyched to be whisked away to this bustling food-centric place, full of the sights and sounds of street food vendors, markets and hungry people. If only we had smell- and taste-o-vision.

We're about as horrified as the contestants are when they spot Padma Lakshmi. Oh wait, this isn't just a culinary vacation? We have to work too?

The Quickfire Challenge, using the local ingredients and a wok, is fair. Sorry, Angelo, we're sure it was tasty, but Ed got you beat. This would be fine, but we really hate a smug winner, and Ed was chapping our hide.

The Team/Elimination challenge was just odd when it came to Ed claiming he had planned two dishes all along. Okay, maybe he had thought it, but it was pretty clear in their meeting that they all agreed on one apiece, right? Granted, a guy has the right to change his mind, but to make it sound as if he was the only responsible one ... eh. We give him props for being a good team player and his excellent dishes. Execution is not our problem with him. It's his attitude.

It kind of stinks that the competition was so close. In the end, Kelly (aka Countess Luann-lite) had to pack up her knives. Too bad there won't be a lady in the final.

And OMG -- that's Hung Huynh, Michael Voltaggio and Ilan Hall! Having "Top Chef" champs back to help is so much better than having your eliminated teammates come back.

So we leave you with a few questions/musings:

  • How did you feel about giving the Quickfire winner immunity, effectively guaranteeing a spot in the final?
  • Is using a wok really that rare?
  • We weren't sure about a team challenge this late in the game, but it kind of worked.
  • Has your opinion of Ed, Angelo or Kevin changed since this last episode?
  • Did you see Angelo crying when Kelly was eliminated?
  • Not the best season, but we're psyched for the finale considering the help they're getting.

What happened with Ed - what an A$$.
Wasn't he the one who suggested they all make one dish.

I think Angelo is losing it - was he that afraid of being voted off.

Hope Kevin wins - gotta go with the hometown team.

Angelo was crying BEFORE Kelly was eliminated. Apparently he was that afraid of being voted off. Ed and Tiffany have been my favorites this season, but I agree that Ed was rather tool-ish in this episode. I would have been completely annoyed if I had been one of the other chefs, so big props to them for working together so well and producing a truly successful meal.

I can't stand any of the contestants.

I don't like any of them really and hate the judges for kicking off Tiffany and Kenny. Completely ridiculous season. Reminds me of the equally ridiculous Season 2 when Cliff was DQ'd and Sam was sent home early.

I hate when they bring back former contestants to help - they should have enough for the chefs to choose from a wide field. Last year Kevin ended up with the worst sous chef. And who will forget Carla's poor luck the year before with Casey (Carla - why did you listen to her?!) I don't think you can put Ilan in the same category of chef as Hung or Michael V.

I've liked Ed all along, but his attitude this episode really turned me off. It's as if Kevin and Ed are really gunning to mentally screw with Angelo. Then they turn around and say they want to win because of their cooking skills. I understand it's a competition, but it's a two faced attitude that Ed hadn't really expressed before. Now it has me rethinking some of his comments from previous episodes and I wonder if he's always been a tool.

I wish Kevin had gone home instead of Kelly.

I don't know if Angelo was plotting as the other chefs said he was. However, it's starting to seem like he and Kelly were the least douchy of the group.

Ed is such a douchebag - and it became even more evident last night. Have disliked him intensely ever since he bragged - to one of the women, no less - that he had banged Angelo's girlfriend at one time. This is something to brag about? On national TV, no less?

His attitude last night was all about screwing Angelo now, not the girlfriend. What a poor represntative of being a Top Chef if he wins. Last night made me miss Tiffany all the more. Ed is just a classless jerk.

Ed is such an idiot. It's his insecurity why he's behaving like that. Angelo always talks of his passion for food and never about "kicking someone's ***" as Ed kept on saying. The way Ed announced that he had planned on 2 dishes in front of Tom despite the team having decided on one dish earlier which surprisingly was suggested by Ed himself just goes on to show his true intentions. Slimy character. He could not hide his true nature for long. Seeing this episode makes me wonder about the "Pea Puree" controversy - did it really go missing or did Ed fake it?
