'The Event' review: The new 'Lost'? Or the new 'FlashForward'?

the-event-review-320.jpg"Lost" and "24" left some pretty big serial mystery show shoes to fill after their departures last season. Can "The Event" fill in? Maybe.

It's hard to tell after only one episode. Certainly the show raises several interesting questions, but will it mete out enough answers to keep viewers tuning in? And can it sustain the mystery all season? We're dubious, but we're already engaged enough that we'll give the show a chance

We don't want to give too much away, but basically "The Event" is about, well, an event. The first episode doesn't get into the details, so right away there's one mystery to get viewers to return. What the first episode does reveal is a prison camp (think Gitmo North) where Sophia Maguire (Laura Innes) and 96 others are being held.

Until President Elias Martinez (Blair Underwood) decides to close the camp, release the prisoners and apparently introduce them to the world. He does this against the recommendations of his advisers, including Blake Sterling (Zeljko Ivanek).

Somehow caught up in the government mystery is average guy Sean Walker (Jason Ritter), his potential fiancee Leila Buchanan (Sarah Roemer) and her father Michael Buchanan (Scott Patterson).

The show plays fast and loose jumping around in time -- the present, 8 minutes ago, 13 months ago, the present, my sister, my daughter, my sister, my daughter. It will help if the time-jumping calms down a bit -- it was like a "Lost" episode on steroids. But the cliffhanger at the end of the first episode left us wanting to know more, particularly Sophia's line to President Martinez, "I haven't told you everything," which is also the title of the first episode.

And making the viewers want to know more is really the goal of a show like this. So mission accomplished. We just hope it doesn't string us along for too much time or viewership will rapidly decline.

Our first instinct is to call it this year's "FlashForward" instead of the new "Lost," but we hope it proves us wrong. Watch a sneak peek trailer below. "The Event" premieres Monday (Sept. 20) at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.

NEVER!!! but i will still watch tonight and give it a chance

Nothing will ever be LOST...now I'm sad again

Agreed... nothing will ever compare to the mystery and scope of Lost. They were truly lucky to have ABC behind the project given the money and ratings concerns as the years went on.

Can't begin another show like this. Still missing the best, "Lost", and disappointed with how quickly "FlashForward" tanked.

I've not seen anything but the promos for the show, but from what you wrote about there being a detainment camp, here's my guess about what the "Event" is: the 97 people being held in the prison camp were abducted and returned to earth by aliens.

there is no replacement for Lost. Ever. I'd rather watch my dvd's episodes over and over again and still figure out some of the mysteries than invest in new characters on a new show.

I'd rather watch my Lost DVD's than invest in a new show which will disappoint. there is no comparison to Lost except that you may have to use your brain a bit more than your average tv show.

I'm sure other shows can work out mysteries and stories just fine, but 'LOST' told ONE giant story over the entire show's run. No show has yet to embrace that ability with as much passion as that Island had.

I keep looking for the next "Lost" only to be disappointed with some probably very good shows; albeit ones who will never fill the very big shoes of Lost...best not to make the comparison. I will be watching The Event tonight though.

Where Lost succeeded, and FlashForward failed, is in getting the audience to care about the characters as people. Without this, a complicated plot is just exhausting. Lost was very clever in using the whole first season to establish characters.

Loved every second of the pilot- until the last minute. I seriously was BLOWN AWAY. It was epic. But I really hope this show doesn't take the cheap sci-fi route out. That's where Lost "lost it."
