'The Defenders' is pleasantly surprising

the-defenders-320.jpgWe'll be honest -- we had written "The Defenders" off as a silly show that would be one of the first to be canceled. But two episodes in, we're pleasantly surprised at how entertaining it is.

While Jerry O'Connell as Pete Kaczmarek is solid, but we are really digging Jurnee Smollett as fresh-out-of-law-school, former stripper Lisa Tyler and we especially like Jim Belushi as Nick Morelli. Belushi is amusing, but also brings some nice heart as the show's center.

His antics in the pilot episode were a neat bit of courtroom trickeration. His taking care of the 9-year-old daughter of a woman he is defending pro bono was very sweet. We can see why this show was so popular in its premiere and have no doubt the ratings will stay up there.

Interestingly, the show was originally supposed to be a reality program about real-life Las Vegas lawyers Michael Cristalli and Marc Saggese. It evolved in to a scripted drama, but Cristalli and Saggese are on the phone with producers and writers each week, consulting on every script, while series stars Belushi and O'Connell study their every nuance to ensure their depiction of the duo is accurate.

What do you think of "The Defenders" so far?

Well I Liked it while it was on. The dvr recording cut it off before I knew what happened in either case.

This show is great...one of the best new shows of the season.

I was only able to see 30 minutes of it so far..but I am liking it

LOVE IT. I'm also very pleasantly suprised also. I thought it would be axed first.

I think it is great.

I really enjoy this show. Jim Belushi and Jerry O'Connell are great!

I'm surprised at the positive reactions because I've found all of the ads I've seen to be total turn-offs. I still remember the original Defenders. Jim Belushi is no E. G. Marshall. I guess I'll check it out but I'm not optimistic.

Sue, they're not trying to do anything having to do with the original, there's just only so many things you can call a show about defense attorneys.

Definitely TWO THUMBS way up for "The Defenders" Brings some much needed new blood to the courtroom genre.

I tuned in because of lack of choices in that time slot and was pleasantly surprised at how much I really enjoyed the show. I'm hooked :)
