'Life Unexpected's' Kerr Smith: Ryan and Cate's marriage is 'as rocky as they get'

lux-shiri-kerr-wedding.jpgWhen Season 2 of "Life Unexpected" begins, Ryan (Kerr Smith) and Cate (Shiri Appleby) have just returned from their honeymoon, with tag-along Lux (Britt Robertson) along for the ride. Just don't expect the honeymoon stage to last very long.

When Zap2it paid an exclusive visit to the show's Vancouver set, Smith said that Team Ryan may take a hit this year.

"Well, let's see," Smith laughs. "We rushed the wedding. We don't really know each other all that well. We've both got secrets piling up. Listen, the first year of any marriage is rocky, but with Ryan and Cate, it's as rocky as they get."

At the radio station where they both work, things are just as messy as they are at home. "Cate and Ryan live together and work together, and it can get hard to separate work stuff from home stuff," he says. "That can create some friction in a marriage."

Last season focused on introducing viewers Cate, Baze, and Lux -- and whatever baggage came with them. Now, we're going to learn a bit more about Ryan... and we might not like what we find out. "I'll just say that he's not as good of a guy as he might have led you to believe," Smith says. "He's not a villain or anything, but he's not who you think he is. He might not be who Cate thinks he is. Who doesn't have secrets? He's got some skeletons in his closet, definitely."

Uh-oh. He can't be that bad of a guy, though, because he's willing to forgive Baze (Kristoffer Polaha) for crashing his wedding moments before the kiss. Kerr explains that Ryan and Baze will come to an understanding this season. "There's a part of Baze in Ryan. Maybe earlier in his life, Ryan was that guy - the partier, the guy who takes the bong hits, the drinker. At some point, he decided to grow up and become a professional, responsible adult, and Baze did not."

Despite a bumpy road with Cate, Ryan's relationship with Lux is safe. "I think their relationship is as close as you can get, father-daughter wise, even though he's her stepdad," he says. "I love doing scenes with Britt. They're always very heartfelt."

I loved season one of LU but I was SO disappointed in the finale that I'm not all that interested in even watching season two. They should not have had Cate marry Ryan even if they didn't have her hook up with Baze ( which would have been infinitely more interesting.)
Now what is there to look forward to? Even in fiction land I wouldn't root for the break up of a marriage so the main attraction of the show for me- the Baze and Cate relationship - is gone.
I can't stand Ryan ( no offense to the actor) and while Lux is great she isn't enough for me to really care anymore about this show.

Janet, I completely understand where you are coming from. For me, Cate and Baze - as a (potential) couple, and as a family with Lux - are the main reason I watch the show. They are the heart of the show, in my opinion. I also have an extremely high respect for marriage and refuse to outright root for a marriage to fail - fiction or not. If Cate/Baze are the end game - and I hope they are - it upsets and disappoints me that they essentially set up Cate and Ryan's marriage to fail. But, I still care about the show and am excited about the second season. Here's why:

1. I've grown to care very much about the three main characters in a short amount of time. I'm invested in their lives now, so I want to see what happens next. I especially want to see Baze continue to grow and become the man (and father) he was always supposed to be.

2. Besides the romantic love triangle, the family dynamic between Baze, Cate, and Lux is what hooked me on the show. It's so touching. I want to see Lux continue to grow closer to her parents. I adore Lux and Baze's relationship.

3. Despite my strongly held principles about the sanctity of marriage, I simply can't deny myself the opportunity to see Cate and Baze's journey together continue. The finale only made me believe more strongly that they belong together in the end. The fact that a marriage will have to end in order to make this possible will certainly taint Cate and Baze's happy ending for me. But, I can't deny myself the satisfaction of seeing it. Like I said...I'm invested.

4. The finale left me bitter, and I want to give the show a chance to fix that in the second season.

As for Ryan, he's not my favorite. But, I'm looking forward to learning more about him and seeing him as a more complex character this next season - not perfect "Mr. Wonderful."

I'll be watching.

@Janet

I'm a huge fan of Ryan & Cate, so them getting married doesn't bother me. But I will admit it was a little rushed. If I remember correctly Luke in Gilmore Girls married someone else, and they divorced. Lorelai got married to Christopher, and they divorced as well. Lorelai and Luke did get together in the end though. So just because Cate & Ryan married it doesn't mean they will be endgame.

In my opinion if they hooked up Baze and Cate after only 13 episodes that would have been moving too fast, and bad writing.Just be patient, and watch the journeys of these characters. TV is not about instant gratification. So if you are not willing to be patient, then this is probably not the show for you.

Totally agree, @Jenny.

I can't wait for 9:00 p.m. I LOVE this show! Go Baze!

I love this show. Tuesday is my favorite night for T.V. I hate all those reality shows. I look forward to finding out what Ryan is hiding. I've become fond of the 4 main characters. Great Show.
