Katy Perry 'Sesame Street' appearance yanked off the air
"Sesame Street" has cold feet about Katy Perry. The "Teenage Dream" singer had a schedule appearance in a music video with Elmo on the Monday, Sept. 27 debut of the show's 41st season, but then clips leaked out on YouTube.
"'Sesame Street' has a long history of working with celebrities across all genres, including athletes, actors, musicians and artists," Sesame Workshop says in a statement. "'Sesame Street' has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult. We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or caregiver. We also value our viewer's opinions and particularly those of parents.
"In light of the feedback we've received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of 'Sesame Street,' which is aimed at preschoolers. Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on You Tube."
The comments haven't been very kind. The video is a song parody of Perry's "Hot and Cold," used to teach viewers about opposites. It's not the concept or the singing that's at issue, however. Perry wears a yellow dress with a bustier top that displays her cleavage prominently. Many of the comments refer to her breast and whether or not preschoolers will be fixated on them.
Judge for yourself:
Perry will be the musical guest on the premiere of "Saturday Night Live" this week with host Amy Poehler. We demand a puppet parody!

I'm glad they decided not to air it. I watched the entire clip and really couldn't get over the dress. I'm glad that my girls won't be seeing it on Sesame Street. There really is no reason for them to watch that. Change her costume and then it should be okay.
Oh come on. Are you kidding me? These are preschoolers we're talking about. Get a grip, people.
Yeah, cleavage is one thing. Betty Boop had way more than Katy Perry, for sure. No big. But the Muppets doing a parody of True Blood and calling it "True Mud" is another thing. Let's leave the softcore for Skinemax, can we? Our kids don't need to be exposed to poorly written schlock like that, anyway, regardless of its licentious awfulness.
Are you serious??? They pulled it because of her cleavage??? Give me a break! Kids watching this show aren't interested in Katy's *****, they're more interested in watching Elmo!! They wouldn't even notice!! Cartoon characters these days have more cleavage than Katy.
why the he77 is she wearing that on Sesame Street? she couldn't dress a bit more modestly for the kiddie show? just sayin'.
People seem to forget it's 2010. Oh well. The hilarious thing is people are so fixated on her cleavage they forget a) kids that age have no sexual feelings and b) 99% of them are probably still (or recently were) ****** FEEDING! And as an adult, personally I found the closeup of her legs to be sexier than the cleavage. This is ironic to say since we're talking about Sesame Street, but some people need to GROW UP. Props to the producers for keeping the video in circulation for fans, though. And that probably includes a good percentage of Sesame's demographic, many of whom are already Net savvy if you believe the Microsoft "Windows 7 is designed by me" ad that features a 6 years old making an Internet video...
Miss Piggy has more cleavage? Miss Piggy was never on Sesame Street, she was on the Muppet Show! (You would think a website about TV shows would know that.)
I wasn't even looking at her cleavage until there was a big stink about it. Upon second viewing still wasn't noticing the cleavage. Catchy song with Elmo won't be seen because the conservatives have a problem with it. Me and my friends with kids do not see a problem with this video. I guess Sesame Street just wants to record and rewatch Yo Gabba Gabba in it's place.
Reminds me of the episode of Scrubs when Elmo is getting a little cozy with the intern Denise then says, "What she's your woman?"
JC -- Yes, we do know that Miss Piggy is not technically a Sesame Street character (although Miss Piggy-like characters voiced by Frank Oz have appeared on the show). But we're still talking about two shows featuring Jim Henson's Muppets, which appeal to kids. It's really not that big of a stretch.
