'Dancing With the Stars': Jennifer Grey's emotional waltz
Jennifer Grey certainly didn't shy away from her "Dirty Dancing" past on "Dancing With the Stars" Monday (Sept. 20).
The actress and partner Derek Hough danced a Viennese waltz to "These Arms of Mine," a song featured in "Dirty Dancing." It was an emotional moment for her, and it showed through both in rehearsals -- where she broke down after contemplating the loss of her co-star and friend Patrick Swayze -- and in the dance itself.
All those feelings, however, translated into one of the most powerful performances of the night. The judges thought so too -- Grey and Hough scored 8s across the board to finish with a 24, the night's highest score.
What did you think of Grey's performance?

Totally fake crying. It's called "Tug at the Audience Heartstrings for Votes". And what a COINCIDENCE that she got assigned a song from "Dirty Dancing". I guess they thought everone would forget that she and Patrick Swayze couldn't stand each other during taping of the movie. Maybe she really was crying - with guilt that she was such a little hag in those days.
Actually, they didn't get along during Red Dawn, but we're much friendlier during Dirty Dancing. The famous Silvia/Micky dance was spontaneous when they were fooling around together in warm up. A warm up wouldn't have had that much chemistry if there were such bad feelings between them.
I don't think her emotions were fake at all, and I really don't think she was trying to "buy" votes with those tears. Perhaps she did feel guilty that she lost a lot of time with Patrick but whatever their relationship was like, she genuinely seemed to really miss him now that he is gone. I think they did fight like siblings, but wouldn't you cry and grieve if you lost your sibling too? As for the dancing, I definitely thought no one put Baby in a corner tonight!
I think despite a NASTY publicity stunt pulled by DWTS execs, Jennifer Grey did exceptionally well. I've faked crying before and you don't heave and sigh and gasp for air as your talking if you're in control of the tears and emotions. That was a awful thing to do to her. As if being the first week wasn't enough! That was absolutely horrible of the people who assign the music! The thing is everyone says they didn't get along on set, but according to what I've heard from his memoir, despite her pecadillos, he still admired her and her him! Hejust didn't like how "girly" she could be at times, mood swinging from emotional to goofy at a moment's notice and requiring many retakes. THAT is the big, bad friction!
It was so cheesy and tacky to cry like that. Lame.
That was so fake - I thought it was cold. Her "friend" that she hadn't seen in 20 effing years. Give me a break.
That was pure raw emotion! When people cry, they cry instantly like how it looked.
Working on a movie set is every intense, and emotions run high. You don't come across people like Partick often, and their loss will shake you to the core. I'm not suprised Jennifer broke down at all, I'm sure many of Patrick's friends did also watching on TV. I also thought Jennifer looked even more beautiful than she did in "Dirty Dancing."
I agree with those that thought her tears were real. it's like sometimes when something just hits you. maybe they weren't the closest but they shared an important moment in their lives. like she said, she could suddenly remember it like it was yesterday, and the loss stings still. i can understand that. her waltz was lovely.
@JimJam: there's a reason she looks better now (if you think she looks better or not, she certainly looks different). sorry to be crass.
I really admire Jennifer Grey's tribute to Patrick Swayze on DWTS. Last night was just special. They got to dance to a song that is so iconic and it triggered great souvenirs.
