'Brothers & Sisters': Something's wrong when Justin is the voice of reason

brothers-and-sisters-abc-season-5-z-cap-320.jpg
In the season premiere of "Brothers & Sisters," we saw very little of what would realistically occur during the much-ballyhooed one-year time jump. In essence, we're not even sure it was necessary.

For example, "Grey's Anatomy" jumped just a few months and the changes after its bloody finale are palpable - an unforeseen marriage, a resignation, and a few breakdowns.

Where is the fresh new landscape that the executive producers have been promising for the Walkers? We understand that a huge accident like the one they experienced can change a person, but to this extent? In the end, not only did it make very little sense, but we felt they did a disservice to some of our favorite characters.

  • Nora (Sally Field), really? How credible is it that after decades of being an extremely doting mother that Nora hasn't stepped in to shake some sense into Kitty about keeping Robert on life support for a whole year? Or that she didn't warn Justin that his wife had moved out? And the most disappointing part of it all? That her need to redefine herself takes her from establishing an amazing center for kids in the last two seasons to becoming an employee at a flower shop?

  • Did they have to neuter Holly (Patricia Wettig)? With her memory constantly rewinding to the day of the accident, it was a sad, almost ludicrous story turn for her.

  • Possibly the most alarming story point for us? Robert's goodbye. We felt the one-year time jump was a good amount of time for Kitty to mourn before she got back into the dating game. Now, with just having pulled the plug on his body, it just seems so horribly soon for her to do so at this point, right? Not to mention, Rob Lowe's character was allowed to whither on the vine during his tenure on the show, but now his character literally does so as a vegetable on a hospital bed? It totally erases that last valiant scene from the car wreck when he knows he's going to die and shows tremendous, heart-aching courage in the face of it.

  • Thankfully, we thought Dave Annable carried Justin's storyline really well. His character seemed to be the only one that actually went through a year of soul-searching after the accident (for better or for worse in regards to his marriage) and the only one in which the one-year time jump made any sense for.

Other moments that made us go, huh?:
  • Please explain the story purpose of no one from the family having eaten at Scotty (Luke MacFarlane) and Saul's (Ron Rifkin) new restaurant? Just strange and totally out of character for the family to not support their fledgling business.
  • Why is there any discussion as to whether or not Sarah (Rachel Griffiths) should sell Narrow Lake? Is there even another option at this point?

If the producers were trying to get across that something has been broken, point made. But can they fix it at this point? Shoot, a year has passed. Chop, chop.

I agree with the Nora comment......and the Holly comment....but disagree with the rest.

OMG - maybe the worst season premier of all time. I swore at the end of last year I was finally breaking up with this show, but I tuned in just to see what happened. I really believe the writers could NOT have done a worse job! And is it my imagination, or does everyone look like they aren't happy with the situation either? Well, I've finally done it - I just deleted the series recording from my DVR!

Ii was looking forward to the show again but I had to turn it off because it was so incredibly boring and stupid , not to mention poorly written scripts and I am sick of all the gay crap .... Noone really wants that crammed down their throats for. Entertainment. I will never watch this program again

I have to agree. I was generally not happy with the premiere. It felt super disjointed and just off the mark. I don't know quite how to explain it. Although I admit the scene with Kitty & Nora the hospital did get me.

First of all- anybody who opens with OMG is not a credible source. Will disregard that comment.

I felt it was a good premiere. The first half- could have been better- but the second half was great.

And- yes the scene with Nora and Kitty in the hospital was also great.

Hell- season 3 was A LOT worse!!

How anybody can make it through that and not this??? I don't get it.

Must be Rob Lowe fans....

Okay, last year they removed hottie Tommy and his beautiful wife. Now they've killed off hottie Robert (Rob Lowe) and are threatening to have the greatest man of all-Luc go back to France. If Sarah leaves they will loose a lot of viewers. And Sarah's ex-husband the doting Daddy who stayed home with the kids is just going to be fine with this? Or is Sarah going to abandon her kids? Kitty just got over cancer and now she is a widow...too dark. Holly, the most interesting character has been erased. Where is Rebecca?! Justin the ex-addict is the main male lead?! I love Sal's wit too bad they had to fall into stereotyping him as HIV+ cause he's gay. And what's with Kitty not wanting to travel because of her comatosed husband, what about her kid!? She tried so hard to have a baby and now she is just going to abandon him or drag him around the country for a job? And Nora the glue that holds the family together, just completely does a 360 personality change in one year!?! HORRIBLE WRITING! And good GOD NO MORE MISCARRIAGES or ADOPTIONS that storyline has been milked to death!

Rinnie....Horrible Interpretations.

The whole point is that the crash happened and when Justin went back to the war she changed. She was much like when the show started(look back).

Luc is annoying. Him and Sarah decided NOT to go to France.

Tommy was arrogant. Julia was beautiful. Rob Lowe had great chemistry with Calista. Kitty's story has turned Very dark.

Yes- Justin has been a changed man ever since mid season one. It is season 5- now he is a MAN. Just like Nora said- He has grown. The war changed him this time, for the good.

Too much Gay crap in this show.

Saul's HIV has barely been mentioned.

Anyhow- I'm done. Watch it again. You misinterpreted A LOT.

And Rebbecca moved out- she will be returning to wrap her storyline up. And Holly better get back to normal- I was just starting to really like her!

Sorry Kris. Rinnie was spot on and you're the one that is way off. This show is in shambles. I was hoping it would have a complete rehaul after last season's crap. I actually thought the whole year jump was because they were acknowledging issues and hoping to start fresh. Didn't happen. Mark my words, this will be B&S's last season. Something went horribly wrong in the writing dept and clearly ABC is not willing to fix the problem and probably figures it's best to just let the show die and go away.

Two comments on all the 'gay crap'...stop watching then, homophobes! If the gays stopped watching all of the 'hetero crap' there would be nothing left to watch...

Crap, well said!
