'True Blood': Is Bill Sookie's biggest threat?

true-blood-sookie-stackhouse-season-3-250.jpg
Sunday's (August 8) episode of "True Blood" took us another step forward in Sookie's (Anna Paquin) evolution into whatever she is. And from what we can tell, whatever that is, it's going to rock.

We appreciate when a TV show doesn't rush a character arc. "True Blood's" writers have definitely been evolving Sookie slowly, so that whatever seemingly powerful being she is revealed to be is believable to us the viewers.

We've already seen she has a tremendous ability to love. The male characters are naturally drawn to her. We've witnessed her bravery. We've witnessed short, but well-placed, bursts of her "microwave fingers." And in this episode she showed off her sheer physicality (without using any of those cool powerful bursts of energy we like so much) in a fight against Alcide's (Joe Manganiello) were-ex, Debbie (Brit Morgan).

And if we may be so bold, she knows how to handle her vampire sex. The imagery of Sookie on top of Bill (Stephen Moyer) with her hand on his throat is not lost on us. Once again, not only hot, but very skillful foreshadowing. It all amounts to meaning Sookie is going to be a powerful being, indeed.

There are at least a few people who seem to know what she is. And from next week's previews, Bill will admit that he does, too. Yet, Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) warns her (via a message from Sookie's cousin) that she shouldn't trust Bill. Then, there's Claudine (Lara Pulver), the whimsical being from Sookie's near-death dream in the last episode, who also warned her not to let Bill "steal her light."

We can't ignore that Sookie and Bill's relationship has the overtones of an abusive relationship and even she has figured out that her relationship with him is wrought with drama and places her in harm's way. Yet by the end of the episode, they're apparently back together?

Do you think there's something to the warnings? Despite her growing powers, could Bill be Sookie's biggest threat?

Bill finds out next epi what Sookie is and tell's her, no duplicity there.

As usual Eric does a good thing and follows it with a bad thing, Warns Sookie about Russell and then tells her not to trust Bill.

I don't think Sookie's hand on Bill's neck means a thing. Sookie's still hopped up on V and trying to give Bill her version of vampire sex.

It's Bill/Sookie and Bill/Jessica reunions that made a good episode great!!!

Bill and Sookie are jokes in most of fandom. They have some devote followers sure... but for the most part they are ridiculed. Bill is still considered constipated no matter what Ball tries to do.

Why is Eric warning Sookie about Russell and telling her not to trust Bill a good/bad thing? Bill really is not that noble. I'm not saying she should trust Eric either.

I was so surprised at the reunion of Bill and Sookie at the end. You made a good point about her hands on his neck. I noticed that, too.

I believe their passion and love. The chemistry between them is amazing. But it's doomed and the warnings from Claudine and Eric confirm it.

Last night's episode was fantastic. Best of the season so far, but I keep saying that every week.

The book readers hate Bill. Lots of us who haven't read the books love Sookie and Bill together, though. Is he secretly after her powers? I'll be bummed, but it looks like it's heading that way.

evie, I agree, I'm tired of book readers ruining every thread with their Bill hate. Now, I can agree that maybe they need a break from each other for a while, but I get tired of everything Bill does getting trashed. I think the Queen sent Bill to watch Sookie, but I don't think its much more than that. Of course, Eric fans will spin it as the greatest betrayal ever. I can see Sookie being upset about Bill not telling her about his connection to the queen, but ultimately I don't think he wants her power or anything.

The queen sends Bill to acquire Sookie which makes it a lot worse than to watch her because he does, in fact, acquire her. Also in the book his fling with Lorena is MUCH more willing AND he rapes Sookie in the back of his truck. Not cool. Also a lot of the heroic things Bill has done for Sookie in the show were actually done by Eric in the books. That's all. I don't normally comment on TrueBlood 'cause I don't watch it anymore but you don't need to flame the book readers. We're just fans like you. Of a similar yet very different story.

But ultimately, what you are talking about happened in the book. None of what you described has played out on screen that way, so that's what I'm going on. I don't know what's going to happen with any of the characters, but the fact is that Bill hasn't been anywhere near as horrible as book fans constantly spam boards trying to convince everyone that he is. He's a flawed character with both good and bad traits, and I just feel like there's this constant need to put him down not based on things that actually have happened, but that are always colored by the way the books went. Your post is a good example of that. The show feels that it's bad enough that he lost control and drained her, but did not have them rape her so why would I hold that act against the TV Bill? Book fans seem to resent that this didn't happen because they just want the Bill character destroyed so they can have what they want. My problem is that no matter what actually happens on screen there are way too many fans who refuse to be objective because they have their book agenda to push, and I'm just tired of it.

Anonymous, your comment is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. What you're describing did not play out that way on screen, yet book fans continue to let things like this color everything. I don't care what was or wasn't done in the book by what character, and if they didn't have Bill rape Sookie on screen then I'm not going to hate the character for it. Book fans seem to really resent that this didn't happen, and it just tells me that they want to just see the Bill character destroyed simply to see their own vision play out. Now, I'm actually much more of a fan of Bill rather than Sookie and Bill, so if they break up I just hope they let the Bill character continue his own journey. But he doesn't deserve nearly the vitrol thrown at him by those mad at Alan Ball for not playing things out they way they want him to.

I read the books, and I prefer the show to them. I too am tired of the Bill haters and those trying to compare the show to the books. The show is NOT the books!

I too love the Bill/Sookie relationship. Their chemistry is remarkable. I can't understand those that think she should be with Eric. He has lied to her. He's hurt people close to her (Lafayette, and now Hadley) and he has his own agenda. I do believe he is curious about Sookie (now I'm talking the show, not the books), but I don't think he loves her.

That said, I love Eric! He's an interesting and attractive character. And he saved Sookie by staking Talbot. So thank goodness for Eric!

Hey all you Eric Haters Bill and Sookie are fantastic together and hopefully Eric can find another boy toy to play with since he staked Talbot.

Geesh don't you think Eric said those thing to Hadley to steer Sookie away from Bill and into his arms. Yep typical Eric BOOK readers. Only want to see what they want to see.

Oh btw I read all the books AND still saw through Eric and hated him for his arrogant, manipulative, self-centered way.

Oh if you have forgotten Alan Ball himself said that the love between Bill and Sookie is genuine.

STOP COMPARING THE BOOKS TO THE TV SHOW!
