'Supernatural': Welcome to adulthood, Dean Winchester
As excited as we are about the Season 6 premiere of "Supernatural," we can't help but feel a bit stressed as news trickles in. After all, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) never fare well when they're separated -- and when the series returns to The CW on September 24, the brothers Winchester will have been split up for an entire year.To add to our separation anxiety, the most iconic part of the show is going to be M.I.A: the car. In an interview with AOL TV, Executive Producer Sera Gamble confessed that Dean's beloved Impala has been relegated to collecting dust.
"He's not driving the Impala," she says. "It's under a tarp, and when he needs something from the trunk, he just lifts up the edge. It's torturous!"
Why don't you just rip our heart out?
Dean's been playing grown-up for his girlfriend Lisa and her son Ben, who we last saw in Season 3 looking an awful lot like a Winchester.
Having trouble imagining Dean as the responsible type? So were we, until we remembered that he took care of Sam throughout their tumultuous childhood. "Our goal is to have Dean be an adult," Gamble says. "He's in his early thirties at this point, and Lisa is a real character with a point of view and a child who's in the mix here, a child who really loves Dean."
When she puts it that way, we're conflicted! Gamble told us at the recent CBS/Showtime/CW Party in Beverly Hills that Lisa would be present throughout the first half of the season. Does this indicate a breakup sometime before the holiday hiatus? If so, will Dean still play surrogate dad to Ben?
So many questions!
Meanwhile, Dean thinks Sam is cooking in Hell -- a place he's all too familiar with. Though Dean promised Sam he wouldn't try to save him from "the cage," he couldn't resist picking a few locks. We're hearing that Dean did give saving Sam his best shot, but ultimately resigned himself to the fact that his brother was dead.
Poor guy. It's no wonder he couldn't save Sam... Sam was already saved.
Padalecki told us at Comic-Con that Sam would step into Dean's shoes and take the reigns more this season.
"I think Sam was like, 'Dean thinks I'm dead, it hurts, I love the guy, he's my brother, but he'll be happier without me.' So Sam has been hunting on his own and now they're reconverging and we're figuring out how it happened," he added in a round table interview at Comic-Con (Video from My Take on TV below). He says that Sam will be doing less brooding this season.
"He's tactical first, like Dean was in Season 1," Padalecki adds. "He's somebody who's like, 'It sucks that the mother of these two kids is possessed by a demon, but she's possessed by a demon. We have to kill her.'" He says that he's gone back to watch Season 1 to create his take on Sam-as-Dean.
Let's discuss, Zappers. Do you think Dean is dad material? Are you mad at Sam for leaving Dean in the dark (and presumably in mourning) all year?
Tell us your wishes for Season 6 in the comments below and you may see them published in a future article.

I have many hopes for season 6. I really do love Lisa and I hope she and Ben are fleshed out well as characters, to make the audience really love and feel for her. I think we all know that eventually she and Dean will split by either death or just the Supernatural world, and I can see this as a really emotional scene if done right. It can also carry into the rest of the season[s]like Jessica to Sam.
I really do think Dean will be a great dad. He may have never wanted that job, but he did a great job raising Sam and Dean has never had a problem relating to kids in other episodes. This situation kind of reminds me of a Grey's Anatomy quote about Alex Karev. "Well, guys like Karev… at least you know he’ll never lie to you. Guys like him, they must run in their 20s, but then they, you know, pack it in and teach their kids to play catch." Now, we know Dean is in his early 30's but given the chance I really do think Dean just wants to settle down and be a family. But that could just be my fantasy Dean talking... ;)
I'm also really looking forward to the Sam and Dean interactions after they reunite. I don't watch Supernatural for the thrills or action or all the scary ****, that's not my cup of tea. I watch it for the family and emotional drama along with the humor. It's the relationship the boys have and how the show explores it that brings me back each week. As long as that is the main focus point (without Dean shedding a tear each week) I think Season 6 can't go wrong.
I want more female characters, chromatic characters, and queer characters, preferably with at least one of surviving, recurring, and not being antagonistic. Also more about Jess and about John's family. On plot considerations, especially getting back to the SamnDean show without fridging Lisa, I trust Sera Gamble. (More than I trust anybody else who's ever been in Supernatural's writing room. Did you know Gamble's the reason S4 Ruby was possessing a body where the original occupant wasn't home? It didn't occur to anybody else in the writing room that any other scenario that involved Sam sexing Ruby would mean Sam raping Ruby's host.)
Do you think Dean is dad material?
Absolutely. I believe we were told and shown he's a caretaker. And a good one.
Are you mad at Sam for leaving Dean in the dark (and presumably in mourning) all year?
That just kills the character for me. Whatever his reasons are, it's inexcusable. Can you imagine if Dean, upon returning from Hell, had thought that Sam was making a good life for himself with his seeming girlfriend and had decided to let him be? I'm sure that would have gone down well with the crowds.
Yeah like the Supernatural turning to "full house" show. Where are the brothers fighting together again. WHere are the promises that this season we'll bring them back together. Been hearing this for 2 years. Way to go, it'll never happen.
I say keep the brother apart as long as possible and let them develop relationships with other characters. I'm so over Dean being all about Sam and Sam being all about Sam. It's beyond boring and repetitive and it's destroying both characters for me.
I would like sera gamble to blow my mind in season six, please:) I would like to think that Lisa lied, and for Ben to actually be revealed as Dean's biological son. I'd like to see if the Antichrist kid makes an appearance or plays a role in anything. I never get enough of seeing the guys talk in unison, a little more jerk/***** action, the sweet movie references, hot cars, and classic music. I was blown away by the entrance of Death last season, more please:) I hope Lisa is a strong female that can hold down the fort while Sam & Dean handle business. And here's a rather odd request: would love to see Shaun & Gus from Psych somehow intercect with an episode of SPN. Their chemistry is amazing, just like our boys!
I think it really wasn't fair to Dean that Sam was out and never told him about it.We all know that the definition of family and being happy is different to Dean ,and well, Sam as his brother should've known that, better than anybody else , he should've known that Dean wouldn't be really happy, thinking about him in hell!Yeah, that's why I'm kinda mad at Sam!
Anyway , I'd be happy to see Dean as a father , but watching the old Dean back is much more fun . I love to see the bad-a*s Dean again,I love to see him as the OLDER brother with his smarta*s mouth .I just want 'THE Dean' back.
And as much as I'm glad that Sam's gonna be less broody , I kinda don't like bossy Sam! I like Dean to be the older one , as he IS the older one . They're just much better that way.
Ah, and I'd love to see lots of Hurt!Dean this season!:D
The only thing that troubles me about the setup for season six is the writers' decision to have had Sam hide his return from Dean. I really hope there's more behind it than a totally mistaken and patronizing assumption by Sam that Dean would be better off living with the agony of believing his brother trapped in Hell. After the mutual respect and understanding the brothers finally achieved by the end of the last season, I find it hard to believe that Sam would be so cruel, especially knowing from his own experience the guilt, grief, and despair of having a beloved brother consigned to eternal torment. That's a world different from simply missing and mourning a dead brother. I really truly hope there's a better reason behind Sam's decision than the writers' perceived need to create artificial conflict between the brothers. Dean was ready to walk away from hunting without being pushed - that would have been a natural progression from his season two through five arc of growing disaffection; his desire to stop losing everything and everyone he loved to the hunt could have been a motivator even without being deceived into it by Sam. So my wish for season six is that we find there's more going on: that Sam had a real reason - something acceptable to Dean - for leaving Dean trapped in the despair of ignorance, and having others (including Bobby, which also feels unbelieveably wrong!) do the same.
JP will never be able to be "Dean" and it's pretty clear that the show is trying to make Sam into Dean in an effort to make Sam more popular. Only Jensen can be Dean and I wish this show would just stop trying to recreate the character using different actors. It has a great actor playing a great character, go for it show, don't try to destroy it!
As for Dean growing up, Sera, Dean is grown up and a lot more responsible than any character on that show. So maybe you may want to change your wording.
I too am tired of Dean being all about Sam, and Sam being all about how special he is. It would be nice for Dean to just tell Sam to take a hike for once because honestly, Sam does not deserve a brother like Dean.
Season 6 is sounding like an extension of season 5, where everyone is made stupid so that Sam can look smart. Pft. Sera, you better change the format, cause season 6 is sounding like a loser already.
i'm not at all surprised sam let dean be - i actually was hoping for it. again, it's the ultimate sacrifice. sam loves dean more than life itself and he has a lot of self-loathing. he thinks he's bad for dean and truly believes his brother is better off without him.
which of course, isn't true. i'm sure that dean will be a wonderful responsible dad on the outside, but struggling and unhappy on the inside. he's good at hiding it, we've seen enough proof of that. and he'll try his best, just because sammy asked it of him.
that's what i love best about the entire show: that these brothers love each other so much, they believe they're not good enough for one another. so i hope there's a lot of man-angsting in season six, while they're trying to get through just how much one means to the other.
also, the samulet has to return ASAP. i will be very disappointed if dean never wears it again. VERY.
i'm so happy season six is going to focus more on the brothers, it's a good switch from the epic apocalypse and it's what made me watch the show in the first place. and i'm really looking forward to new monsters every week, as well.
