Ricky Gervais, Bruce Springsteen, 'Boardwalk Empire': HBO press tour notes

ricky-gervais-gg-320.jpgRicky Gervais will do a second comedy special for HBO at the end of this year.

"Ricky Gervais: Out of England 2" will tape Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 in Chicago, and the special will air in December. The show is a followup to his Emmy-nominated 2008 special, "Out of England."

"In my first HBO special I covered AIDS, disability, bestiality, rape, racism and famine," Gervais says. "This second special is a little darker."

HBO also has a second season of the animated "Ricky Gervais Show" on its schedule for next year.

- A documentary about Bruce Springsteen's followup to "Born to Run" will debut on HBO in October.

"The Promise: The Making of 'Darkness on the Edge of Town'" will premiere Oct. 7. The film chronicles Springsteen and the E Street Band during the recording and shaping of the album, the first album after his breakout hit "Born to Run."

Springsteen and Thom Zimny, who also worked on a making-of documentary for "Born to Run," collaborated on "The Promise," which will feature previously unseen footage of rehearsals and recording sessions for "Darkness," during which the band went through dozens of songs before settling on the final 10.

Other notes from HBO:

  • HBO wants to make really sure that you have a chance to see the premiere of "Boardwalk Empire." In addition to a pair of replays immediately following the Sept. 19 premiere, the first episode will air simultaneously on six HBO channels at 9 p.m. ET Monday, Sept. 20. HBO2 will also air the premiere three times on Sept. 20.
  • "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" won't return as a series, but it could still have some life in it. HBO co-president Richard Plepler says the network is talking with The Weinstein Company about developing a couple of movies based on Alexander McCall Smith's novels.
  • Some rough premiere dates for upcoming projects: "In Treatment" begins its third season in October, "Game of Thrones" and the miniseries "Mildred Pierce" will both debut in the first few months of 2011, and the Laura Dern comedy "Enlightened" and the David Milch-Michael Mann-Dustin Hoffman drama "Luck" will follow later in the year.
  • In addition to "Mildred Pierce" and the previously announced "Cinema Verite," HBO Films will also debut "The Sunset Limited" and "Hemingway & Gellhorn" in 2011. "The Sunset Limited," based on Cormac McCarthy's two-character play, stars Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson and is directed by Jones. "Hemingway & Gellhorn" tells the story of the marriage between Ernest Hemingway (Clive Owen) and war correspondent Martha Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman).
