'Law & Order: Los Angeles' tackles Proposition 8 in early episode

Now that its sizable cast has fallen into place, producers at "Law & Order: Los Angeles" are turning the conversation to the different kinds of stories they plan to tell in the latest iteration of the legal franchise.

Executive producer Rene Balcer tells AfterElton.com that an early episode of of the series will examine California's recently overturned Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in the state for nearly two years. "One of the episodes that we're doing is [about] the money behind the Prop. 8 people and the hypocrisy of black churches supporting a Proposition like that," says Balcer, "and also looking at the whole 'initiative industry' and how these lobbyists make a lot of money."

Balcer goes on to say that exposing different hypocrisies is one of the series' goals, and the LA-centric example was a natural subject to tackle. "[We] were sitting around talking about it and thought, 'Okay, we got the first six stories. What's the next seven?' And then this came out."

"Law & Order: LA" premieres Wednesday, Sept 29, at 10 p.m. ET.

Should be interesting..I'm looking forward to this show.

Good, the L&O franchise has a history of taking real life headlines and turning them into episodes.

STUPID. I'm for gay marriage but many people are not. I hate it when TV entertainment show starts lecturing us on "hypocrisies" based on their own political biases. These issues are a lot deeper. L&O shouldn't alienate a huge part of its audience with its political agenda, especially when the franchise is hoping to survive given it is hanging on now by a thread. It's stupid. They should deal with great intriguing cases, not their political beliefs, whether I agree (in this case) with them or not (in many other cases). If they really want a debate, then give both sides of the pov to two characters, and let them debate it. But don't preach to us. Rene Balcer is no one to be preaching "right" and "wrong"....

Ugh, whatever. Not interested. Personally, Hollywood would be better off not tackling hot-button issues where the reasons behind and why will get twisted. But considering it's on the Nobody (but) Barack Channel, not all that suprising.

In that case, why should I bother watching a show that focuses on political issues instead of crime and punishment? I prefer to watch TV for entertainment, not political indoctrination. Political issues should be limited people's personal opinions.

Samantha, L&O have been doing this for 20 years. They always have a good way to take political situations and put them in the show by having a crime related to it. Since **** Wolf will be running the show, I have confidence it will be good (although I have not like the Jeff Goldblum era of L&O: Criminal Intent).

TJ, L&O has been doing "ripped from the headlines" for 20 years. It's only in the last 2-3 years on the **** Wolf-run shows (SVU he has the least impact on thanks to the strength of Neal Baer, which is why it's the best of the group) that they've been getting increasingly partisan and political. Not a good recipe for a show to be successful. I have no problems dealing with hot issues if they show both sides, but when they try to indoctrinate, it's no longer entertainment, and many people who don't care for their pov - who might otherwise still watch the show for entertainment - are turned off. It's stupid. And since when is Wolf so great? He created L&O 20 years ago - one script that spawned a great franchise certainly - but other people really do most of the work, except for when he wants to weigh in. He has never created a single other successful show (New York Undercover was a single at best and ultimately still didn't it). He'd best stay out of it and let other people do the work, and cut his BS politics.

When a show as intelligent and well-written as a "Law & Order" series addresses these sorts of important (and often political) issues, it's difficult unfortunately to please everyone, precisely because of the polarising nature of such issues. It's inevitable that it will cause controversy. I just thank the writers for having the courage to air these debates in a public setting and to be able to treat their audience with thoughtful, topical drama.
