Box Office: 'Last Exorcism,' 'Takers' in a fight to the finish

takers-sony.jpgAccording to studio estimates, frightfest "The Last Exorcism" has a slim lead over heist flick "Takers." So slim, in fact, that the rankings could change after final numbers are released Monday.

But as it stands right now with the estimates, "Exorcism" takes the weekend with $21.3 million and "Takers" takes second with $21 million. Both films performed better than was expected, however.

"The Expendables," after two weekend titles in a row, still posted a solid third place with $9.5 million, bringing its total box office earnings to $82 million. Needless to say, a sequel is in the works.

Julia Roberts' journey of self-discovery "Eat Pray Love" took fourth place with $7 million, while "The Other Guys" rounded out the Top 5 with $6.6 million.

The rest of the Top 12 was as follows: "Vampires Sucks" ($5.3M) "Inception" ($5.1M) "Nanny McPhee Returns" ($4.7M), "The Switch" ($4.66M), "Piranha 3D" ($4.3M), "Lottery Ticket" ($4.01M) and the special "Avatar" re-release ($4M), which brings its domestic total to $753.8 million. This re-release version has almost 10 extra minutes of footage.

Summer 2010 has been a summer of one lame flick after.

....another, sorry.

I agree Alex. Very disappointing summer except for a few bright spots like Toy Story 3 and Eclipse. It's sad when the summer movies wereso bad you can't remember what the good ones were.

Eclipse a bright spot? We really are reaching aren't we?

I concur with these comments.

I would also note that even 3D ticket prices could not save the latest Piranha movie from being utter chum.

Perhaps, in Hollywood's infinite wisdom, it might be time for another round of sequels, plus higher ticket prices!

Can't wait for the Expendables sequel. I had a feeling that Takers was going to do better than expected, it does have a great cast. And added that T.I. is in it, it will also attract his music followers.
