Box office: 'Inception' beats back 'Schmucks' with $27.5 million weekend
According to weekend estimates (actual numbers will be released Monday), "Inception" tops the box office for the third weekend in a row. The dreamy drama beats back strongest new entry "Dinner for Schmucks" with a $27.5 million haul, bringing its total gross to $193.3 million.
"Schmucks" makes a comparatively strong showing, besting the Christopher Nolan thriller on Friday, but ultimately falling short with $23.3 million. Angelina Jolie's "Salt" drops 47 percent to 19.3 million -- and third place -- but still fares much better than most of the weekend's new entries.
"Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore" ($12.5 million) and "Charlie St. Cloud" ($12.1 million) stumble in at fifth and sixth, respectively, separated by only $400,000.

Did Charlie St. Cloud stumble? I realize that Zac is a draw for some teens, but this was a low budget flick with quite a few no-name actors. I can't imagine that they were expecting much more than what it took in.
"Dinner for Schmucks" looks stupid, I'm surprised it did that well.
Dinner With Schmucks does look stupid, but its high total doesn't surprise me, since movies of this kind are popular at the moment. Crude, yet with heart, seems to be big with the male 25-40 crowd, so expect more like this.
since movies this summer are not opening big with few exceptions, i think 12. mill is pretty good opening. during winter months majority movies wish they open that big. zac is not an opener yet but im sure will be next 5 years!
dinner for schmucks was predictable and merely funny. steve carrel did still all the scenes. the ending was the funniest of all the 3 acts.
charlie st. cloud was surprisingly very good. im rooting for efron. he's got some chops.
Five tears ago, a Jolie action pic would have opened to 40-50 million in its opening week. Is the public getting bored with her? On the other hand, Carell pics were #2 and #4 this week. Not too shabby for Steve.
