'American Idol's' Adam Lambert sings Freddie Mercury's praises on NPR
"American Idol" finalist Adam Lambert joined NPR Monday morning (Aug. 30) for a piece on Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, whose 64th birthday would have been Sunday, Sept. 5 if he had not passed away in 1991.Lambert covered several Queen songs during his run on "Idol," but says that nobody is quite like Mercury.
"During 'We are the Champions,' he goes 'of the world' and he holds that out for a really long time and it kind of echoes off into the distance," says Lambert. "Instead of just being like open and just singing it through an open throat ... he squeezes it and it gives this emotional intensity."
Lambert also thinks Mercury overt showmanship is missing in today's music scene.
"It was about the music, but he also really captivated the audience because he was so electric. That's why he's an icon because you remembered what he did on stage, he had a presence," Lambert says.
"There's definitely something missing in today's music scene," he continues. "We don't have a lot of men on stage doing flamboyant or theatrical. We have a lot of female pop stars doing it, but where's the classic pop-rock showman?"
Listen to the whole NPR piece here. Adam Lambert is currently on a nationwide tour with fellow "Idol" finalist Allison Iraheta. Do you think he does Freddy Mercury proud?

What's wrong with you bloggers? You don't even bother to research what you SAY. Adam Lambert never covered SEVERAL Queen songs on AI. He auditioned with BoRhap and did the finale with Brian May of We are the Champions. And only because Brian May was out of this world impressed with him (as was Slash who asked a friend to get him in the show to see Adam in person). That's it. JEEZE. Meanwhile, yes they share a very special gift and love of their audiences. Adam will be iconic as well. It remains to be seen oh what level but meanwhile, he's done more for LGBT than anyone else in entertainment in history. And for that, he will always be our ICON. Thank you Adam for being YOU.
He does HIMSELF(ADAM that is)proud. Adam is his own artist/not a copy.
Freddie was indeed great. His greatness will live on in his legacy of performances.
Adam's voice also can go right to your soul.
Your link is wrong. It doesn't go to the Adam interview it goes to a Freddie piece. sigh.
Ali, that's the NPR interview.
I want to puke when I see this flaming **** performing...he's apart of the reason for all the messed up youth in our society...I bet he already has aids and hepatitus C from all those gang bangs on him back stage...he probably has to wear a butt plug to keep it shut...
I gather "Good American & Greg" are the same person? I'll take the word of Brian May of Queen who actually knows something vs an ignorant person who posts hatred on a blog (coward). As Brian himself stated "I have not heard a male singer since Freddie Mercury who could turn me to Jelly". Enough said - you loose Adam wins.
ooh, sorry to see Adam haters here. That is so toxic and Adam is not. He is a true entertainer and is making great strides for the LGBT community.
Adam Lambert could never even be in the same hemisphere as Freddie Mercury. Freddie was one of a kind with real talent. He never needed to be a 'wannabe' like Lambert is.
I highly doubt that in 5 years Lambert will even be around unless it's in some dive bar somewhere. Freddie has been gone 19 years and his music is still great.
freddie mercury is one of a kind. so is adam. what's the problem?
good american and greg, you both are disgusting and hateful. you put yourselves right in the gutter.
