'30 Rock' spoof rooted in reality: Tina Fey's dowdy bank commercial

tina-fey-bank-commercial.jpg
Remember the 2009 episode of "30 Rock," "Apollo, Apollo," where Liz Lemon reveals her secret past as a commercial actress for Chicago phone sex line, 1-900-OK-FACE? Well, like most things Tina Fey plants in her series, there was some real-life experience behind that.

Gawker points to her 1995 commercial for Mutual Savings Bank. No, it's not as bad as phone sex, but it's pretty embarrassing. The dated ad features a vest made from couch upholstery, mom-hair and Fey rocking an undeniable resemblance to Jennifer Jason Leigh in the first half of "Single White Female. We'd want to forget about it too.

Compare and contrast for yourself.
