'Wicked' movie attracts Ryan Murphy, J.J. Abrams

The hugely successful musical "Wicked" is on its way to becoming a feature film, and that news has already attracted the interest of several high-profile directors.Although the project is in its very early stages of development, "Glee" co-creator Ryan Murphy and "Star Trek" and "Alias" helmer J.J. Abrams have already expressed interest. So have Rob Marshall ("Chicago," "Nine") and James Mangold ("Knight and Day," "Walk the Line"), according to Deadline.com.
"Wicked" is based on a novel by Gregory Maguire that makes the Wicked Witch of the West from "The Wizard of Oz" -- named Elphaba -- the heroine and Glinda the Good Witch a snotty social climber. The musical opened on Broadway in 2003 and was a huge success. Idina Menzel won a Tony in 2004 for playing Elphaba, and Kristin Chenoweth was nominated for her role as Glinda.
The musical has been touring pretty much continuously for the last several years, and the next step is a movie adaptation. Marc Platt, who produced the musical, will do the same for the film adaptation. The musical's book writer, Winnie Holzman ("My So-Called Life") and songwriter, Stephen Schwartz, are also involved in the development.
There's no word yet on a possible start date for the movie.
