'SYTYCD': Ashley Galvan injured, placed in Bottom 3
Another dancer down! Another dancer down!"So You Think You Can Dance" is racking up the injuries, and Ashley Galvan is the latest casualty, sitting out from the Wednesday, July 14 performance show.
With the opening sequence done, it's apparent that only six of the Top 7 dancers are present.
Host Cat Deeley informs the audience that after Galvan's rehearsals on Monday (July 12), she was experiencing severe rib pains and that doctors advised her not to dance this week. She was scheduled to dance with all-star Pasha Kovalev and fellow contestant Robert Roldan.
As with Alex Wong the week before who was also sidelined with an injury, she'll be automatically placed in the Bottom 3. If an injury is so severe that a dancer needs more than a week off, they'll have to leave the show.
Let's review. All-star Allison Holker had to sit out one week for a floating rib injury, but returned to work. Wong's Achilles tendon ruptured, and thus he had to be eliminated. He underwent surgery Monday and in a video, thanks the fans for his support.
We'd hate for Galvan to be out of the running. Not only has she been dancing excellently, but she's only one of two girls left.
With the injuries piling up, maybe it's time to reevaluate the toll this show takes on the dancers. Learning two or more routines a week in different genres that one's body may not be used to could just be too difficult.

Well, Tommy Tune commented last season about SYTYCD, saying that he believed it was not good for a dancer's health. He should know, I'd imagine.
I don't know how anyone can say they're being pushed too hard. Injuries can happen to anyone at anytime. Sure the risk is greater if you're involved in a physical activity but they happen all the time. It sucks when it does happens but you jsut got to hope they can bounce back. this has been a great season so far and I think it's because tey are being pushed more and because of the All-Stars.
I'm not sure whether they are being pushed more now, but they know what they sign up for, no one is forcing them to do it. I'm sure, say, doing seven shows a week in Vegas or on Broadway, and weekend matinees, can be just as grueling in different ways.
Yes, doing eight shows a week on Broadway is very grueling, but the dancers there are highly trained regarding health issues. It's a pride of Broadway that they are so cognizant of the health of dancers.
-----------
They do significant warm-up and do dances that are tailored to repeated performance within a dancers' ability.
------------
Broadway dancers, of course, also have to sing ad act at the same time, and can dance up to 10 numbers a night - but they're monitored so closely and trained so highly, it's not the same at all.
------------
Again, if a dancer/choreographer like Tommy Tune said last season that he was concerned - and we see more injuries this season - that says something.
One final comment - injuries may be common for dancers, but NOT injuries that result in pulling out of performances. That's not common at all for professional dancers working on Broadway or in ballet companies (or on music tours). Those injuries (the type on SYTYCD) aren't common at all.
So whats the point of the show, if half the danncers are going to be eliminated by injuries?
I think that for their dancer age and performer maturity, they are being pushed too hard. They are all pretty talented but their enthusiasm might be bigger than then sensibilities. The choreographers should know better... and, speaking of knowing better, can Nigel shut up?! He never seems to know when to stop talking...and, Nigel, no more dancing behind the desk please? It blows your creds...whatever they may be.
Anybody who has ever played a real sport is laughing while reading this
Christy, you're wrong. Tommy Tune was speaking about shows like DWTS that use non-trained dancers.
Beth - thanks for the comment - I looked at the quote again - he spoke about dancers who are "dancing beyond their training." I think this fits the situation here - esp when Achilles tears and floating rib injuries are generally from overuse or misuse. (Allison herself stated her floating rib injury occurred because she chose to keep doing a lift incorrectly because it looked nice.
