'SYTYCD': Ashley and Kent compare dancing with all-stars vs. contestants

ashley-galvan-sytycd-video-320.jpg"So You Think You Can Dance" Season 7's new format threw most of the fans for a loop.

With the all-stars in play, there were less finalists this time around, which we're still not thrilled about, but we'll take what we can get.

As the competition got underway the first few weeks, we weren't so sure about the all-star pairing since they mainly served to highlight just how untried the competitors were. Occasionally, an all-star and a contestant had decent chemistry, but it was still odd to watch a performance and still have our eyes drawn to the all-star.

The Alex Wong and Stephen "tWitch" Boss hip-hop number certainly changed perceptions of the benefits of pairing with an all-star. Perhaps it was a combination of chemistry, Wong's virtuosity or choreographer Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo's savvy, but all eyes stayed on Wong. The routine was the highlight of the whole evening.

With the Wednesday, July 7 episode, however, we finally got to see the contestants dance with the other contestants, and in the case of Lauren Froderman and Kent Boyd, they produced magic. After the performance, Boyd and the other dancers talked to Zap2it about performing in both formats.

See what Boyd and Ashley Galvan have to say:

We're still not entirely sold on the all-stars (as lovely as they are). Probably the other downside is that there are fewer contestants so, the fact that we lost three ladies in three weeks has made the gender balance incredibly skewed.

I am caught in the middle of this.
On one hand i like seeing the contestents dance with eachother,
but on the other hand i love watching the all starts (MARK!!).

Maybe next year they should go
back to the top 20 format and
save the all starts for the top 10
making the competion harder at
that point.

i like seeing some of the old dancers...but they picked some bad contestants this year...ppl made it that shouldnt have and some that should were not selected but that is the judges fault...and you can tell by how quickly all the girls are being voted off

I agree. Whittle down the original twenty to ten and then have contestants dance with both the All Stars and each other, like they did last night. I liked that.

The stage is my problem. ITs way to big, I like the older looking stage better

The new format is awesome. But the men are always favored in the show it seems. Only 2 girls left, and they're both great. Hope they last longer than a few of the guys at least. I do think the stage seems so big now, but that don't matter, the new lighting is fantastic.

What they should have done for that 1 Fall season was made that an All-stars season where the all-stars compete against each other. I think having 2 seasons back to back last year kind of killed the momentum of the show and also thinned out the possible contestants.

RaraGaga,

I agree completely.

I think the chemistry is missing that develops from a partnership. I've been mostly bored. The all stars are great but why not just have a yearly exhibition show featuring them?

I love see some of the all stars, but I miss see the new contestants paired together and the watching chemistry form.

I still too can't get over the new horrible stage which has taken be out of the show.

I like the All-Star format less and less with each passing week. I agree that the All-Stars are terrific dancers, but as others have said, why not showcase them seperately during the "off season?" When Nigel touted the brilliance of Alex and Twitch's performance the other week, it belittled the other contestants, assuming that only an All-Star could've performed that well. I don't think it's fair. Dancers wait and wait to compete in this show, and now they have to share their time in the spotlight with people who have already had theirs. Let the new contestants learn how to BE dancers and performers together: that's what the show used to be about. Who decided to change the foundation of the show? It's not like SYTYCD wasn't producing brilliant dancers the way the show used to be.
