'SYTYCD': Alex Wong injured, placed in Bottom 3

alex-wong-sytycd-01-320.jpgAlex Wong, who wowed "So You Think You Can Dance" the previous week with his insane hip-hop routine with Stephen "tWitch" Boss, can't top that performance this week.

The ballet dancer had been looking forward to two dances on the Wednesday, July 7 episode, but during rehearsals the day before he injured himself.

Wong and his partner Adechike Torbert had been practicing an athletic Bollywood number the day before when Wong landed and clutched his leg in pain. Wong was also scheduled to dance a foxtrot with Anya Garnis.

Executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe pronounced it a "ruptured Achilles tendon." It's not clear how long Wong will be sidelined. Soccer star David Beckham had suffered a similar injury and was advised to sit out at least six months.

When asked if he hurt, Wong replied, "Only in my heart."

Replacing him to partner Torbert is the Bollywood choreographer's assistant. As part of the new rules this season, Wong will automatically be placed in the Bottom 3 facing elimination.

It's the second sidelining injury of Season 7. All-star Allison Holker is out for this week as well after hurting her floating ribs. She plans to return the following week.

We're hoping Wong is okay, especially after leaving the Miami City Ballet in order to participate on the show.

Heal well, Alex.

UPDATE: After Wednesday night's (July 7) show, Zap2it interviewed some of the dancers backstage. Injuries and pushing through them are just part of the dance process.

In fact, Robert Roldan reveals one of his injuries (but thankfully doesn't actually "reveal" it), and then Lauren Froderman tries to call attention to Kent Boyd's skinned nose. If you're quick you can see the makeup.

Alex, I am so sorry about your injury. You are the best technical dancer I had ever seen. I hope you will heal fast so I can see you on the dance floor again. Please make it to the top finale, I only watch this because of you.

ouch!! I don't think they have
ever had a season with so many
injuries this far into the main
season. Perhaps they are pushing
these dancers to hard. They have
to learn up to 5 DIFFERENT
routines a week, not even dancers
like Madonna's or Lady Gaga's are
pushed that hard. Not even
Broadway shows push the dancers
as hard as SYTYCD.

I'm hoping he didn't rupture the Achilles tendon; but if he did, having to quit the show and not being able to dance for months might actually be a best case scenario. There are successful treatments but it CAN potentially be a career ending injury.

Very disappointed Wong got injured, he truly was the best this season. I wish him a quick recovery and hope to see him in the competitions.
Get some rest and will vote for you all the way:)

@Mammaduke

I agree that they may be pushing the dancers too hard. Ruptured Achilles tendons are usually overuse or abuse injuries - meaning there wasn't enough warm-up, rest time, etc.

I beg to differ, though, regarding the statement that SYTYCD dancers work harder than those on Broadway. Those Broadway dancers are pushing HARD - and usually they're singing / acting as well, through roughly 10-15 numbers every show, eight performances every week.

The difference is they have a lot of training on caring for their bodies and making sure they're ready. The schedules are also human - unlike SYTYCD.

So sadden by Alex Wong's injury. He is truly a "dancing machine". I had no doubts in the beginning of this series that he would rise victorious and become the winner of this season's competition. I prayed for him last night. "Alex, be well in all things."

Alex, I am a dancer with an injury too. I broke my toe/foot so now I can't dance. I am in a professional production this summer that requires 6 performances a week. I am devistated so I know exactly how you feel. You can come chill with me on my couch and do crunches and dips with me on commercials. I miss you dancing, you are definitely the best dancer in America. I'm praying for your recovery.

Adechike Torbert is cursed!! First Allison partnered with him and got injured, now Alex.

Alex is my inspiration!!!!! I soo hope that he gets better and can dance next week. He should be the winner!

Alex, I am a fan of the show and also Canadian. You are absolutely amazing. I cannot wait for Wednesday nights to watch you dance. Watching you dance literally touches my soul. My thoughts and prayers are with you and hope for a speedy recovery.
