'Survivor: Nicaragua': Ex-NFL coach Jimmy Johnson gets cast away

jimmy-johnson-getty-320.jpgFormer Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson will try not to get his torch snuffed -- or his famously immobile hair mussed -- on the next season of "Survivor."

The 67-year-old Johnson, who coached the Cowboys to two Super Bowl wins in the 1990s, will be a contestant on "Survivor: Nicaragua," the Dallas Morning News reports. The CBS show began filming its 21st cycle in late June in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.

A CBS rep tells Zap2it that the network doesn't comment on casting speculation. The full "Survivor: Nicaragua" cast will be announced in mid-August.

"Survivor's" tight shooting schedule -- the game lasts 39 days -- means that Johnson should be back in the United States in plenty of time for his other TV job as an analyst on FOX's NFL pre-game show. (Presumably he can also film any new commercials for the herbal "male enhancement" pill he hawks later as well.) Johnson, who also coached the Miami Dolphins and at Oklahoma State and the University of Miami, has been with Fox Sports since 2000.

Johnson will be the second contestant with NFL ties to appear on "Survivor"; former quarterback Gary Hogeboom competed on "Survivor: Guatemala" in 2005. The Dallas Morning News also notes that Johnson was reportedly a finalist to make the "Survivor: Gabon" cast two years ago, but didn't make the last cut.

Which begs the question, when will there be a Celebrity Survivor?

ust think, he has a shot to go a long way in this game. Why? People will know who he is and that will HELP him. Not hurt him. You're stuck there listening to boring people all the time. Imagine if you have a mutli time Super Bowl winning coach who's been in the game on the field, behind the scenes and on tv... People will eat up his stories. He has enough of them to not get old after 39 days. He needs to use that to his advantage. If you're a football fan, you're keeping him till the end.

There always was a celebrity "Survivor". It was called "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!" and no one cared.

So this may be celebrity survivor? He sure doesn't need the money

@JW, I knew someone was gonna play the "I'm a celebrity get me outta here" card. Guess you were it; way too predictable bro. Those are two completely different shows man. I said "Survivor," and that means Survivor format. Much better than that other garbage show. You'd see some real backstabbing between some really famous people and just look at them in a whole different way.

What a joke! He needs to be careful not to mess up that toupe of his though.

why? ... chalk it up to another CBS mistake ...

The fall season of survivor has finished shooting already. The spring season starts shooting in about a week probably.
