Melina Kanakaredes leaves 'CSI: NY'

melina-kanakaredes-csi-ny.jpg"CSI: NY" will begin its seventh season without one of its stars, Melina Kanakaredes.

Kanakaredes, who's been with the CBS series since its beginning in 2004, has left the show. Several reports say that she was asked to take a pay cut this season and declined, but both she and the producers put a sunny spin on things in a statement.

"I made some amazing and lifelong friendships during my six seasons on 'CSI: NY,' and I will treasure them forever!" Kanakaredes says.

The network and producer CBS Television Studios, meanwhile, say that "We hoped Melina would return to 'CSI: NY' for another season, but we respect her decision to move on. Her amazing talent and invaluable contribution to the success of the series are greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten. She will forever remain a friend to the network and the studio, and we wish her the very best."

As things stand now, it looks like fans have seen the last of Detective Stella Bonasera -- there are no plans for Kanakaredes to return for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, former "Once and Again" star Sela Ward is reportedly the front-runner to take over for Kanakaredes.

"CSI: NY" is moving from its long-time Wednesday home to Friday nights in the fall. The cast and crew are scheduled to begin filming on July 28.

I understand that CBS must needed to do the pay cut for whatever reasons. Gosh only knows how many other actors had to take pay cuts as well. It saddens me that Melina is leaving CSI:NY without a proper farewell. She is my favorite character of CSI: NY. She was the reason I gave it a shot in the first place when it premiered. I am undecided now as to if I will tune in. CBS be smart and give her a proper sendoff.

Good. She was the most annoying character on this show. Maybe now I will tune in again.

I remember she co-starred with Chris Meloni [of L&O:SVU] in a cop show way back when.

Odd. Will she just disappear or will Sela Ward continue the character. Maybe if Ward doesn't take over, she'll be hired for an episode or 2 where here character will leave or be killed [I doubt on the latter].

When a TV show moves to Friday, it's not a good sign as it is. CSI:NY is probably the weakest [in terms of likable] of the 3. Probably should of killed off 2 of the lesser characters instead. Cast is too big.

Melina is a smart cookie. She was on a great show called Providence and it was the # 1 show on friday nights, but they cancelled it, so I am thinking, the same will happen to CSI-NY so she got out when she should. CBS really sucks

Moving to Friday and losing one of it's leads? Cancelation will soon come.

Really glad to see Melina leaving the show. She was often the reason I didn’t catch an episode.
Sela Ward is lovely looking and also a much better actress. Ward and Sinise would be an excellent pairing.
Melina left when CBS wouldn’t pay her what she thought she was worth.
She’s the reason Providence drew such poor ratings and also the main reason [other then the Danny - Lindsay bubblegum scenarios] that CSI: NY has lagged.
If Sela Ward does replace Melina, its the best thing to happen to this show in a long time.
Gary Sinise is the star of the show, he’s still there, and the show will be even better now.

I too thought she was the most annoying one on the show. She was great on Providence but somehow the name 'Stella' just never jived with me. I wish her the best.

I love Sela Ward and would love to see back on TV. I will definitely give CSI: NY another look if she joins the show.

ha ha ha finally someone took action when an overpaid actor/actress demanded $$ buh-bye sweetheart.

glad to see the cool Sela returning to TV. should help boost the ratings

of course one could argue that if ugly Julie Chen's husband that runs CBS would take a pay cut from his $40M-$50M yearly payout, they could pay more money to the stars.

CBS is likely looking to kill the show without actually outright cancelling it. Putting it on Friday is one thing; hiring an actress who will probably be the oldest member of the cast pretty much cements it. Don't get me wrong, as I adore Sela Ward, but I don't see this move as wise. Her acting is superb, but her delivery tends to be laconic, which is not what an already-dull show like CSI:NY needs. Ah, well, CBS needs to jettison half their schedule over the next couple seasons, so the CSIs should all go anyway.
