'Glee': Ryan Murphy gets a huge new deal

ryan-murphy-getty-320.jpg"Glee" is about to make Ryan Murphy a very wealthy man.

Murphy, who co-created the show with Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk, is on the verge of signing a fat new contract with "Glee" producer 20th Century Fox TV. The deal ensures his continued work on the series -- which has already been renewed through 2011-12 -- and development of new TV projects and also covers music and live productions.

According to Deadline.com, the new contract will pay Murphy $24 million over four years, with the potential to make a lot more. That's because it also includes a piece of the profits from album sales and downloads of the music from "Glee," retroactive to the beginning of the show, as well as cuts of revenue from merchandising and the show's live tour.

Four "Glee" soundtracks were released during the show's first season, and all four reached the top five in the Billboard 200. Two of them hit No. 1. The show also produced seven top 40 singles -- all of which means that Murphy will get a very nice chunk of change from the music end of the show. (He's credited as the executive music producer on the show.)

The new contract also gives him the option to develop a "Glee"-based Broadway show, which given the show's subject matter and rabid fan base seems pretty much like a no-brainer.

Um, FIVE soundtracks were released during the first season -- Volumes 1, 2 and 3, plus the Power of Madonna album and the Journey to Regionals album

Typical idiotic reporting (or lack thereof) from Zap2It yet again!!!

oh good lord who cares if it was 7 or 5?? What is with the **** poor attitude are you out of batteries again?? Next time buy rechargeable!

Look, I LOVE Glee. Like its no one business. BUT!! a broadway musical? really? just because you can do it doesnt mean you should... I'm glad they are cutting the music back and taking it easy with the guest stars because it's getting to become too much. i mean what happened to molly shannon's character? she just came and went. they made it seem like she was going to be a big deal. i think this show just needs to move forward and stop looking back and Murphy should just focus on the show. No musicals, no movies, no freaking books (are you serious?) just focus on the show RYAN

I'm an older fan. I like all kinds of singers and I like some Britney; however, I wish the show would do the Carpenters' tunes and Dionne Warwick. They have done some of Dionne's music and some Burt Bacharach. It would be good to hear Yesterday Once More or any of the Carpenters' music.
