'Glee': Rachel and Finn stay together, plus Kristin Chenoweth, Jonathan Groff, and more
We've got good news for the Gleeks - or at least, those of you who are fans of Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn's (Cory Monteith) relationship. At a July 12 "Inside the Writer's Room" panel hosted by the Paley Center for Media, "Glee" writers Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan dished on what we can expect from Season 2 -- and it's a whole lot of Finn and Rachel.
"Glee" has been criticized for barreling through romantic story lines a bit too fast. It's not uncommon for a couple to get together, break up, and make up all in the course of one episode. Murphy admits that he likes moving through things quickly.
"A staple of the musical comedy is boy meets girl, they break up, they get back together. That's part of the genre," he says. "But one thing I'm interested in seeing, as I think most of us are -- Rachel and Finn kind of broke up twice. Let's keep them together, these two very different people, and let's really see how - in an entire season, with no breakups - what does that couple look like at the end of that season?"
We're guessing Finn will look exhausted and Rachel will look like the cat that ate the canary, but who are we to say? Additionally, don't expect the dynamic duo to jump into bed together too quickly. "In television, once they sleep together, you've let the air out of the balloon," says Murphy, who adds that Rachel will find out that Finn lied to her about sleeping with Santana. "That's a whole episode right there."
We're definitely looking forward to taking a closer look at what these two will be like as a couple, especially after their epic performance of "Faithfully" during Regionals.
Speaking of the show choir competition... this year, we watched New Directions go through Sectionals and Regionals. Next year, the writers promise, we'll get to see Nationals -- but just because the McKinley High kids will be in attendance doesn't mean they'll have actually made it that far in the competition.
"When we pitch the season to Fox, we look at it almost like 'Rocky,'" Murphy says. "We will get to Russia eventually!"
Falchuk adds, "Secretly, this is a sports movie, and at the end of every sports movie, Rudy's gotta go play."
"I have no idea who any of these people are," Murphy admits.
The trio also touched on who we can look forward to see back next year, and confirmed that Terri Schuester (Jessalyn Gilsig) would be back full-time ."We love writing for her. I think what she needs to do is date somebody who will make Will green with jealousy," Murphy says.
"She loves Will," says Falchuk. "He's the love of her life, as crazy as she is. She's a woman in love. She'll do anything to keep him, including something completely insane and crazy."
Also expected to return is Mike O'Malley, in his now Emmy-nominated role as Burt Hummel, the father of Kurt - played by Chris Colfer, who is also up for an Emmy for his role. (They're a talented pretend family, okay?) "That relationship is a true anchor of the show," says Brennan.
Naya Rivera (Santana) and Heather Morris (Brittany) will be upgraded to regulars. Brennan says that Heather mentioned wanting to get acting lessons, and he said, "F*** no!" Upon hearing this, the room breathed a sigh of relief. We like Brittany exactly as she is - in fact, it's Brittany's moments we're most looking forward to re-living when the first season is released on Blu-ray and DVD on September 14.
As for the rumored guest stars, Murphy says that "99% of the time it's not true," except in the cast of Javier Bardem. "That's true. He downloaded every episode, and he says he watched them in a crack den. How do you say no to that?"
Kristin Chenoweth will return early in the season as April; in fact, the writers are breaking her story now. Her fellow Broadway star Jonathan Groff is busy doing a play in London until January, but they do intend to bring Jesse St. James back to "Glee." As for Neil Patrick Harris and Idina Menzel, "We'd love to have them back," says Murphy. "Those doors are open. Though, Neil is on a competing network." He shrugs.
Murphy says that they do plan to reign in the guest stars and focus on the characters we already know and love. "Fox gave us everything we asked for," he says. "We were denied nothing." With that freedom, they decided to go bigger for the last nine episodes of the season, doing an average of eight musical numbers instead of five. This season, we'll see them go back to their original format.
"We'll have five numbers and more character moments," Ryan says.
And what about Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch)? "I think she dated David Koresh," Brennan says. "She would describe it as a wet, extremely hot American summer."

OMG YAY! I love Finn and Rachel and I can't wait to see a full season of them exploring that!
THIS IS THE BEST NEWS EVER.. SO HAPPY FOR FINN AND RACHEL!!!! BEST COUPLE ON TV!!!!
Yes Yes Yes for Finn and Rachel. I want them to take things slowly, I want to see their FIRST DATE, their FIRST KISS as a real couple, Finn introducing Rachel to his mom! And I can wait for the FIRST TIME together because it will be epic.
It's been a long time since I've been this excited to see a romantic couple on screen, I'm older than the obvious demographic for Glee. Thank you Glee writers for making me feel this way again.
Finn and Rachel have the sweetest, most beautiful relationship - I am so happy with this event's outcomes. I am glad they will work through the virginity lies (both of them!!) and it looks like we are in store for EPIC ROMANCE!! So exciting - I can't thank you enough for this awesome report!! Finn and Rachel are wonderful!!!
It's been a long time since a TV couple made me feel so happy. I'm older than the obvious Glee demographic and I'm so glad that they've decided to take things a little slowly. Finn and Rachel are so good for each other. She gives him confidence and he tones her down.
Love the F/R scoop but where the hell is the W/E scoop. I don't care about Terri.
best news EVER!! LOVE FINCHEL....I am so excited for season 2 I can't wait!!! Thank you glee team
Can't wait to see the next season with Charice in it! YEY!
I liked Jonathan Groff on Glee last Season and I think he's a wonderful singer. But I don't want him back to break up Rachel and Finn! Nooo!
