'Glee': Kurt's dad, Mike O'Malley, promoted to series regular

mike-omalley-to-glee.jpgLast week's Emmy nomination isn't the only good news for Mike O'Malley. According to reports, he joins the cast of "Glee" as a series regular on Season 2.

That's one of the many tidbits to come out of the Paley Center for Media's July 12 "Inside the Writer's Room" panel featuring "Glee" writers Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. The trio spilled the O'Malley beans while confirming and denying rumors about umpteen other cast additions.

O'Malley clocked in five episodes during the first season of "Glee," as Burt Hummel, blue-collar dad to openly gay Kurt. Burt's struggle -- and almost immediate acceptance -- of his son's sexual orientation offered early proof that the comedy is also capable of some serious heart string pulling. His work on the episode "Wheels" earned him an Emmy nod for outstanding guest actor.

So that's it, folks. The O'Malley renaissance is officially upon us. Let's just hope he doesn't forget his modest roots, reporting from the foot of the mighty Aggro Crag.

It makes me very happy you made a "Guts" reference.

That is so great! Mike O'Malley really deserves this. He has been so great in the first season.

Guts! The best game show of all time!!!!! I am positively thrilled that Mike O'Malley has been upgraded to a series regular. I love his character and the dynamic with Chris Colfer's Kurt. They make for some quality television.

Looks like O'Malley's career just had a POWER SURGE!

(I was a fan of "GUTS" back in the day as well, but I thought I'd throw in a reference to his first Nick show, "Get the Picture". Let's see who remembers that!)

I watched "Guts" back in the day as well, but allow me to add a "Get a Picture" reference: Looks like O'Malley's career just had a POWER SURRRRRGE!

Love Burt but still waiting on Rachel's dads. The lead actress, drama queen diva and we still haven't met her dads. Come on Ryan. I want two great character actors for her dads like now.
