'30 Rock' live, 'Law & Order' dead: Notes from NBC's press tour

Tina Fey and the rest of the "30 Rock" team will do a live episode of the show in the fall.

The show, which is entering its fifth season, will take to Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center -- the home of "Saturday Night Live" -- for the episode, which is scheduled to air Oct. 14. "We've had great success with live episodes in the past, both in a creative sense and in the ratings," NBC Entertainment president Angela Bromstad says. "I can't imagine a series more suited to do an incredible live episode."

Fey and co-stars Tracy Morgan and Alec Baldwin are all "SNL" veterans, and several other cast members have improv and theater backgrounds. How the normally single-camera show will look in a live episode -- the cast will perform at both 8:30 p.m. ET and 8:30 PT -- remains to be seen.

- If you were hoping for a final episode, movie or event to wrap up 20 years of "Law & Order," we have some bad news: Creator Dick Wolf has moved on.

"I can confirm that it has moved into the history books," Wolf says of the "L&O" mothership, which had its 20-season run ended in May. Wolf says he's "extremely disappointed" that the show couldn't continue on for a 21st year, but he knows it's the nature of the business.

"Everything on television is born under a death sentence," he says. "They just don't tell you the date of execution."

Wolf does say, however, that he's open to the idea of characters from the "L&O" universe being part of the new show "Law & Order: Los Angeles" at some point. The show hasn't made any plans for that so far, but "if it's organic, anything is possible."

- A pair of remakes NBC tried to develop for this season, "Prime Suspect" and "The Rockford Files," are getting fresh life.

Bromstad says that Film 44, "Friday Night Lights" exec producer Peter Berg's production company, will be involved in the "Prime Suspect" pilot, which is getting a new script from "Desperate Housewives" writer-producer Alexandra Cunningham. ("Without a Trace" creator Hank Steinberg was behind a previous version, which didn't go forward because of difficulty casting the lead.)

"House" creator David Shore, meanwhile, is reworking his "Rockford Files" script, and Bromstad says the lead role -- played by Dermot Mulroney in the first pilot -- will likely be recast.

We really like our friend Alan Sepinwall's suggestion of "Lost's" Josh Holloway as Jim Rockford, and with Berg's involvement in "Prime Suspect," we can't help but think that "FNL" star Connie Britton would make an intriguing Jane Tennison. Just saying.
