World Cup weekend schedule: USA-England and Lionel Messi's debut
The World Cup is officially underway, as host South Africa and Mexico played to a 1-1 draw in the opening match Friday (June 11). The game was the first of many morning matches in the group stage that U.S. fans will have to wake up early for -- or set their DVRs. There's a six-hour time difference between South Africa and the Eastern time zone in the United States, which means that afternoon matches there start at 7:30 a.m. ET here.
Friday's schedule also features one more match, between Uruguay and France, at 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The cable sports giant and its Disney sibling, ABC, will broadcast every game from South Africa live, including the USA-England match at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (June 12). It will mark the first time the United States and England have faced each other in the World Cup since the shocking 1-0 upset by the U.S. way back in 1950.
The weekend will also feature the first match for the reigning world player of the year, Lionel Messi, whose Argentina team takes on Nigeria on Saturday.
Here's the full weekend schedule (all times Eastern). Spanish-language broadcaster Univision is also carrying every game live.
