'Torchwood' moves to Starz in 2011

john-barrowman-torchwood-320.jpgThanks in part to Starz, there will be another season of "Torchwood" both in this country and in the U.K. next year.

The cable channel announced Monday (June 7) that it's picked up the U.S. rights to the BBC series and will co-produce a new season of the show to premiere in 2011. Creator Russell T. Davies will return as executive producer and showrunner, and stars John Barrowman and Eve Myles will be back as well.

The show is migrating from BBC America, which aired previous "Torchwood" seasons and got solid ratings from the "Children of Earth" miniseries last year.

Starz promises a "more explosive and global story" for the new season, including possibly pushing the show's racier elements to the higher levels afforded by premium cable. At least that's how we read the portion of the press release that says the show will "take advantage of the unlimited narrative opportunities of a premium television service like Starz."

"We're committed to programming exceptional television that is entertaining, imaginative and provides a premium TV experience, and by any measure the new concept for 'Torchwood' fits that mandate," Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht says.

The new "Torchwood" will premiere on both BBC One and Starz next summer.

OMG!!! I'M SO HAPPY TO HERE THIS!!!

YES!!!

Frankly, I dont care to watch Torchwood after he killed his grandson (yeah yeah, British fans, Americans aren't 'cool' enuf to understand. Whatev. Cap'n Jack supposed to be smarter than that). The series kills all the main characters you luv after they roped you in to care, and thinks cuz you make him 'ooo maybe gay' it's cutting edge.

I do NOT like this news. Well I like that there will be more new "Torchwood"... what I don't like is that it will be on STARZ. I don't have ANY premium channels which you have to pay extra for and I'm not going to pay for one just to get a single program.

I've only seen maybe 3 eps of the 1st season that were up on YT before someone took them off. It'd be nice if they showed the old eps before the new 1s so I can catch up. :)

Thank god it will be back somewhere. I do get Starz but what I want is my cable company to start carrying BBC America and then I can start watching Doctor Who again.

Who really cares about Torchwood anymore after Children of Earth? Children of Earth was a terrible love letter to Russell T. Davis' Ego. He has perverted the few characters he hasn't killed off into people you just can't stand or just don't give a dam about. Starz should have just let it die before Russell T. Davis taints the first 2 season any worst than Children of Earth already has.

I don't see the big deal for people who can't get the Starz network. Just buy (or Netflix) the DVDs or Blu-Rays. They'll be released likely very soon after the broadcast. Anyway, good news about the renewal. Even better news is that this is a continuation of the show and not some stupid reimagining or Americanization.

Why not still keep it on BBC America? How many more viewers are going to watch it on STARS?

FANTASTIC!! This is news I've been waiting to hear since I first got turned on to Torchwood watching "Children of the Earth" and some of the earlier episodes. I like it that it's going to be more global, and possibly edgier. Just one request, please don't kill off the last two stars we have left, they are the show!!
