'Modern Family's' Emmy dilemma: Who to vote for?
Voting for the 2010 Emmys finished on Monday (June 21), and we'll know the results when the nominations are announced in a couple of weeks. Among the races we'll be most interested to see are those for supporting actor and actress in a comedy series -- mostly because of what the cast of "Modern Family" did with its submissions. No member of the ABC show's cast submitted him- or herself in the lead actor categories. Instead, they're all in the supporting races, showing admirable team spirit but also giving voters a huge dilemma: Which actor or actress gets the vote?
The race among the women is easier to sort out. Sarah Hyland, who plays Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire (Julie Bowen) Dunphy's elder daughter Haley, didn't submit her name, and while Ariel Winter is very good as sarcastic middle child Alex, but kids tend to be overlooked in the series categories.
That brings it down to Bowen and Sofia Vergara as trophy wife Gloria. Bowen has the more fully fleshed-out character in harried control freak Claire, but Vergara has shown remarkable comic timing as Gloria. Based on the range of things she gets to play (and better name recognition), we'd give the slight edge to Bowen.
Things get really complicated with the "Modern Family" men. Five guys from the show -- Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ed O'Neill, Rico Rodriguez and Eric Stonestreet -- are competing in the supporting actor category, which makes for a very real possibility that they'll split votes dilute each other's chances. O'Neill is the best-known, Burrell is on a lot of favorites' lists and Stonestreet was a breakout star. But we can't really sit here and argue that any of them were miles better than Ferguson, whose slow burn is a joy to watch, or Rodriguez, the wisest 11-year-old on television.
Our fear is that with so many names in the same category, votes will be spread too thin for anyone to get a nomination. Both supporting categories are pretty deep, and it would be a shame to see "Modern Family's" cast slighted just because they think of themselves as an ensemble.
Viewers and members of the media don't get Emmy ballots, but that doesn't mean we can't vote. In the polls below and in the comments, tell us which "Modern Family" cast member you think is most deserving of Emmy recognition.

I think you are way wrong on this one. Ty Burrell and Ed O'Neill will surely be nominated, because their characters compliment each other, as for the women, both Julie Bown and Sofia should both get noms. Look, Everybody Loves Raymond had 2 noms for both Brad Garrett and Peter Boyle, so Modern Famiy will get multiple nods, too.
The trouble is, there are SO many supporting male actors who can get nominations, some worthy, some not. But let me say this, if Jon Cryer gets nominated over ANY of these guys, it's proof the Emmy voters don't know what they're doing!
I so agree! Jon Cryer ruins Two and a Half Men the minute he appears on camera. I wish they'd increase the role of the maid and mother and get rid of his character.
But it would be a crime if vergara is nominated too. she isn't anything special as an actress and Bowen performs rings around her
Ty Burrell is the only part of this show I can't stand. Scenes where he is featured give me an opportunity to go to the loo.
Ed O'Neill is by far my favorite of the men on this show. And while I LOVE Julie Bowen, Sophia Vergara would get my vote for supporting actress here; she's delicious as Gloria and I love her chemistry with Ed O'Neill.
I agree with Tom completely regarding Ty Burrell's character. I stopped watching the show because his character annoyed me so much.
ty's character is the main reason i do watch the show!
I truly love Ty Burrell on the show; but he grew to become, possibly my favorite character and it took a few episodes to really gel. The first few episodes, the writers wrote him a little strangely and Ty played a bit too over the top.
But he's so good now. The episode where Phil has a kidney stone makes me die.
Ty Burrell is a slam dunk for a nom he is the funniest person on the show, thinking he's the worst on Modern Family would be like thinking Woody was the worst on Cheers. Cam from MF is better than Ed O'Neill but O'Neill may get the nod based on his name recognition. Two nominations max for the MF guys since NPH is a shoo-in and the voters have a lot of other tough calls with Rainn Wilson, Jack McBrayer, Kevin Dillon, Jason Seagel, Piven (though he shouldn't get in)and Aziz Ansari (though he won't get any love). Agreed about all the points on Jon Cryer, it was a travesty he won last year and would be a travesty if he's nominated again.
I wish they would give Sarah Hyland more to work with. That girl is SUPER talented. She played a sleep deprived school girl in LO:SVU that I still consider to be one of the most memorable guest performances that I've ever seen.
Ty Burrell and Ed O'Neill are the superior actors on MF. all the other men mentioned are good and we should look for them in future years (emmy's) as well. the women...not so much.
