'Louie': Comedy is pain on FX

louis-ck-louie-320.jpgIf you're at all familiar with the work of comedian Louis C.K., you know that his on-stage persona is not the most upbeat.

That's the case with his new series on FX as well. "Louie" is funny, to be sure, but there's an undercurrent -- sometimes an overcurrent -- of pain in the series, which premieres at 11 p.m. ET Tuesday (June 29) following the season debut of "Rescue Me."

For instance, this is how he introduces himself in the premiere: "I'm 41 and single -- not really single, just alone."

The show takes pieces of his standup act and uses them as jumping-off points for short vignettes about his life as a single dad -- sort of like the early seasons of "Seinfeld," only more morose. Each episode features two stories.

"Louie" is probably going to be an all-or-nothing proposition for a lot of viewers. We found it pretty funny, but we admit to being predisposed to C.K. from his work on "Parks and Recreation" this past season and from his standup.

The clips below will give you a pretty good idea of "Louie's" sensibility. Will you be watching?

This guys has been around for years, so if nobody has been predisposed already, then they are not fans of stand-up comedy. One of the funniest acts on the planet. This show is awesome

My favorite comedian before. Definitely looking forward to it.

Can't wait for this show! Louis CK is hilarious and a fantastic storyteller. This show mixes both of those strengths, so why wouldn't it be great?

Very smart, politically incorrect show. The two reasons I love Louis CK.

There are a lot of subtle humor moments of awkwardness and shame. If you can't relate to that, then go watch Jersey Shore.

It's not a show that smacks you on the head with humor and I'm not sure I would even classify it as strictly a comedy, which will probably relegate it to the "word of mouth" set. But I'm fine with that as long as FX and the show's fans realize they have a gem on their hands and really support it.

One of the least funny shows I've ever seen.
This should have never made it past a Pilot episode
