Les Grossman -- aka Tom Cruise -- takes over the MTV Movie Awards

les-grossman-tom-cruise.jpgWith Aziz Ansari hosting and the likes of Will Ferrell, Jason Segel, Adam Sandler, Betty White, Sandra Bullock and Russell Brand in attendance, who would've thought Tom Cruise would be the comedy star of the MTV Movie Awards?

But you can make a strong case for Cruise, who reprised his "Tropic Thunder" character, the f-bomb-dropping, money-grubbing movie producer Les Grossman, in several pre-taped bits -- and even appeared live for a dance number with Jennifer Lopez after booting "The Hangover's" Ed Helms off the stage.

Cruise wasn't doing the character just out of the goodness of his heart -- he does have a movie to promote. His latest, "Knight and Day," opens in three weeks, and he and co-star Cameron Diaz appeared together to present the best movie award (to "Twilight: New Moon"). But in taking on the hilariously awful Grossman again, Cruise showed a willingness to make fun of himself that we haven't seen for a while.

Here's our favorite piece, in which Grossman envisions a buddy-cop flick for "Twilight" stars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner and takes on "Karate Kid" Jaden Smith.

What did you think of Cruise at the MTV Movie Awards?

God, I laughed so much :)) I think I watched it about 30 times

...I wish we could go back in time to that moment when Tom Cruise fired his long-time publicist, so he wouldn't; I hate it that because all that we know now of his personal life his star power might be diminished...because, IMHO, he is the king when it comes to promoting his movies...(well, him and Hugh Jackman)...

His LenG character was hilarious and frankly the best part of the show last night. His character's F-bombing was fun in character, but plethora of f-bombage that followed really seemed forced or just unecessary (P Facinelli's acceptance speech?) I wonder if the FCC is gonna give them (mtv) the slap for that...

loved Tom Cruise on the show last night.

Hey D... You do realize that the FCC has no control over "non-over the air" broadcasts? The FCC has no jurisdiction on non-broadcast cable channels or Satellite radio for that matter. MTV self censors itself along with a lot of other cable networks.
