'House': Season finale smackdown

House-foreman-season-finale-320.jpgThe regular TV season has come to a close and while some finales have got us talking more than others, we still have a lot left to say and we're guessing you do too.

So this week, we thought we'd have a little fun with it and pit your favorite show...against itself.

Yep. We've selected a few series and will compare their 2010 season ender to their 2009 season ender. We'll tell you which hour we feel was better, but we'll also have you vote on which one you think was tops.

Some ground rules before we start: As much as we love the freshman shows like "Modern Family," "Glee," etc. we can't include them for obvious reasons. And since this is a season finale smackdown, it isn't really fair to include series finales, which means shows like "Lost" and "24" won't be eligible either.

All cool? Awesome.

So, without further ado, "House"...

"Both Sides Now" (2009): The main case: A patient with two distinctly different personalities, due to the left and right side of his brain operating independently.

The characters: After rapidly detoxing off Vicodin and spending the night with Cuddy, House was actually -- gasp! -- in a good mood. But when Cuddy refused to acknowledge a change in their relationship, House took extreme measures to gauge her feelings about what happened. However, after House told the entire hospital that they slept together -- and Cuddy subsequently fired him -- he realized that he'd hallucinated the entire previous day. Not only had he never slept with Cuddy, but he was still very much on drugs.

As the rest of the Princeton-Plainsboro crew attended Cameron and Chase's wedding, Wilson took House to a psychiatric hospital.

"Help Me" (2010): The main case: House and Cuddy assisted a search-and-rescue team in the aftermath of a major crane accident, and House treated Hanna, a woman who was trapped under rubble and had to decide if she should sacrifice her leg in order to be rescued.

The characters: House gave Cuddy a housewarming present, intended for her new place with Lucas, but when he didn't get the reaction he wanted, he assumed there was trouble in paradise. Cuddy later informed him that Lucas had asked her to marry him and she had accepted.

Unable to save Hanna, an angry House -- who'd been sober for almost a year -- returned home and broke into the bathroom wall to find his hidden Vicodin stash. Cuddy showed up and told him that returning to the drugs would be his choice, but that she had broken up with Lucas because of him. They decided to give their relationship a shot.

House's ducklings were in the background for the most part, but Thirteen left a note on his desk, requesting time off. She told Taub that she wasn't doing okay.

Our pick: "Help Me." Though some fans may disagree, we felt last season's finale was pretty epic. House's descent into madness, as he realized he had hallucinated his night with Cuddy, was one of the most haunting scenes the series has done to date. And Chase and Cameron's wedding was a sweet -- albeit shortlived -- payoff for those two characters.

But in the end, it came down to the case. After all, "House" is a medical drama. Yeah, a dude with both sides of his brain spurring different personalities is fascinating. But House bonding with Hanna over the inevitable loss of her leg broke our hearts and showcased that human side we all know he likes to hide. He can relate to the loss of a limb. And because of that, he fought everyone to prevent Hanna from experiencing that same pain. And since House didn't have Thirteen, Taub, Chase or Foreman to hide behind, he had to deal with the patient firsthand and he had to deal with all the emotions it brought up. When Hanna died, the pain of not being able to win, despite how hard he'd tried -- a not-so-sublte parallel to his relationship with Cuddy -- nearly drove him to relapse. It was the most honest we had seen House in a long time.

And, yeah, okay, fine, House and Cuddy deciding to finally give "them" a chance made us swoon a little. But we solemnly swear that was only an added bonus and not the deciding factor.

So what do you think?

Agreed? Or no?

100% Help Me. That is 'House' at it's best. Both Sides Now, on the other hand, went far too deep into Grey's Anatomy territory with the hallucination and what not. It made season 6 almost unwatchable to me.

I need another option to vote: "neither". I hated both finales. Huddy ruined both of them, and now it ultimately ruined the show for me and everyone else except for the bunch of Huddy fangirls. Thanks a lot, TPTB :-(
And big yes to Alex's comment. The poor way they got rid of Cameron shows how bad the writing is nowadays. And that makes me sad.

Both sides now, I will always remember season 6 of House as epic failure after the way they got rid of Jennifer Morrison just because ther writers were too lazy to come up with a good storyline for her character and the producers too coward to tell the truth to her fans

While both episodes were stunning, certainly "Help Me" was the outstanding choice. This finale brought a gripping medical case which dovetailed in poignant fashion with House's own unresolved issues about his damaged leg. The patient Hanna was strong, non-sentimental, and her fate was heart-breaking. The parallels to the House/Cuddy six season long arc were well conceived and delivered in brilliant fashion. Hugh Laurie, with superb support from Lisa Edelstein, gave the performance of his career as House careened near the brink of a relapse only to save himself at the final moment. "Help Me" is a fantastic foundation for the storylines and character development awaiting us in season seven. I am still blown out of the water by the amazing final few minutes of "Help Me" three weeks later.

You should have a third option in the poll. NEITHER! House&Cuddy imagined or real is impossible to believe or care about. Its cloying and more than that dumb. Bye-Bye House!, I don't want to watch anymore.

Loved both finales but I have to go with "Help Me" being the winner. I liked seeing the show end on a promising note and am thrilled they are going to explore the House and Cuddy relationship on a romantic basis. It's about time.

The unpleastantness and stupidity of House/Cuddy has turned me off this show. Neither of these two people should be in a relationship, especially with each other.

At least Both Sides Now was a hallucination. Thank goodness for small mercies.

I vote for No Reason. It was the last good season finale the show did.

You have to be a Huddy shipper to like how Help Me ended. Whoever that man is, he's not Greg House.

What is the Dean of Medicine doing at a trauma site when she should be co-ordinating at the hospital? What is a lame diagnostician doing crawling over the disaster when the intensivist, the guy who reallyl could help, isn't even there? Does anyone actually believe Thirteen will really be gone this time?

So many sharks, so many jumps.

Loved the season finale to s.6.The shock alone of the Huddy aspect blew my mind. Sorry the Hameron types out there spew nasty on this season but the writers were right to end her role. She had outlived her usefulness as a foil. Chase got more interesting without Cameron. As for Lisa Cuddy and House exploring a relationship, it's the best part of House learning to grow up and have a life. Who wants to watch a miserable guy stay miserable? Its only going to be much more entertaining to see how this couple keeps things under wraps at the hospital. Cuddy/Lisa Edelstein is the heart of the show, House is the soul. Love this now that they're together. Don't screw it up, writers! Or some of us will be pissed. Just sayin'

Hated the House finale. It was what finally convinced me to stop watching the show. The whole concept of "Huddy" is so offensive to me as a woman that I can't even begin to imagine what the creators of the show are thinking?! While House is indeed an intriguing character individually, romantically he's a hot mess! He is extremely mean, abusive, manipulative, misogynistic and so royally messed up that the very idea that a woman like Cuddy (who is supposed to be a smart, successful, independent MOTHER OF A BABY - and do I really need to point out that she is also his BOSS?) would seriously consider getting romantically involved with him is scraping the bottom of the barrel plotwise for a once great show like HOUSE! Clearly the producers of this show have run out of ideas. It's a shame too because both Hugh Laurie and Lisa Edelstein deserve better than this. Good-bye, House.
