The Emmy Awards will air on NBC this year, and the network's most famous ex-employee is campaigning for a spot among the nominees.Sort of, anyway. TBS ran a couple of ads in the showbiz trade papers on Tuesday (June 8) touting ex-"Tonight Show" and future TBS host Conan O'Brien. Only one of the two ads -- the one at the left -- actually mentions the Emmys; the other is a text-only ad that reads, "For your consideration: Conan O'Brien -- Outstanding Achievement in the use of SPF 150."
If nothing else, the ads are a nice way to remind people that O'Brien will be making his debut on TBS on Nov. 8 (there's even a countdown clock on TBS.com). But the potential spectacle of O'Brien being part of the Emmy telecast at his former home would be a huge PR coup for TBS, so there's nothing to lose in promoting his campaign.
It's also entirely possible that O'Brien could be a nominee even without the tongue-in-cheek campaign. He and his "Late Night" staff were perennial nominees for outstanding writing for a comedy/music/variety show, and it's not hard to conceive that his "Tonight Show" writers could earn a nod this time around. The show as a whole is probably a longer shot, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.
We'll find out in a month; the Emmy nominations will be announced on July 8.

The big mistake was stupid NBC suits giving him the Tonight Show slot in the first place.

I'll cheer loudly if O'Brien wins an Emmy! It would be a little bit of vindication, anyway. Even better would be if neither Leno's Tonight Show nor The Jay Leno Show were even nominated!
