'Brothers & Sisters' downsizes, 'Freaks and Geeks' returns

emily-van-camp-320.jpgAdd one more name to the list of "Brothers & Sisters" cast members being downsized as the ABC show trims its budget.

Emily Van Camp will continue her role as Rebecca, but she's no longer a full-time member of the cast, ABC confirms. She's been bumped down to a recurring part; the network and producers haven't determined how many episodes she'll do.

Van Camp is in the same boat as her TV brother-in-law Balthazar Getty, who previously went from regular to recurring. Rob Lowe, meanwhile, has departed for good; he'll turn up on "Californication" later this year.

- The late, loved series "Freaks and Geeks" will return to television this weekend.

IFC will begin airing episodes of the Judd Apatow-produced series, which lasted one season on NBC in 1999-2000, at 11 p.m. ET Friday (July 2), with encores on Sunday and Monday. The cable channel has also picked up Apatow's college comedy "Undeclared," which will roll out in the fall and include an episode previously unaired on TV.

"Freaks and Geeks" helped launch the careers of Linda Cardellini, James Franco, Seth Rogen, Busy Philipps, Jason Segel and Martin Starr. "Undeclared," which aired on FOX in 2001-02, featured Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Charlie Hunnam, Segel, Carla Gallo and Monica Keena.

- We predict that "Lost" star Nestor Carbonell will show up on "Psych" later this season.

OK, it's not a prediction: Carbonell will in fact guest-star on several episodes of the USA series, Fancast reports. He'll play a criminal profiler who's really, really good at his job -- so good, in fact, that he poses a threat to Shawn (James Roday). Said threat also extends to Shawn's personal life.

"Psych" begins a new season on USA July 14.

- CBS' "Criminal Minds" spinoff will no longer have to be called "the 'Criminal Minds' spinoff."

The new show, which stars Forest Whitaker as the head of another profiling team, will be called "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior," CBS says. It was introduced as part of a "Criminal Minds" episode in April.

"Suspect Behavior" is scheduled for midseason.

Yay for Freaks and Geeks! One of my all time favorite shows...the cancellation of which was merely one in a long series of boneheaded mistakes by NBC.

Yeah for Nestor Carbonell turning up on PSYCH. One of the hottest dudes on TV. Love seeing him any time, anywhere.

Boo to ABC for downsizing B&S. Although Rebecca has become just a whiny afterthought. I fear the show will begin a downward spiral as the writers lose the core ideas behind the success of the show.
