'American Idol's' Casey James and Aaron Kelly on Bret Michaels and contradictory judges

The "American Idol" Top 10 are busy rehearsing for their big summer tour, but they took a break to hang with the press on Thursday, June 17. Zap2it caught up with Casey James and Aaron Kelly and we had to ask Casey about performing with ailing Poison frontman Bret Michaels.

At the time of the finale, Michaels was advised by his doctors to stay home. Still, James wasn't worried that Michaels wouldn't get through the performance. "The time that I spent hanging out and the time that we were playing together, I knew that he'd be fine for the music," Casey tells us. "Anything else,  it would've been up for grabs, but I know that guy ... anything could happen on that stage and he'd finish the song."

While Aaron is backing Harry Connick Jr. for judge Simon Cowell's replacement because of his helpful constructive criticism, Michaels is Casey's pick because "he's got a great personality, he knows music, he knows the business, he's been in TV."

Both Aaron and Casey weren't too thrilled with the judges' comments this season. They say that Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson contradicted themselves too much. "It can be confusing to us," Kelly says. "We're trying to do our best out there but it's hard to do that when we don't know what we're doing wrong."

"Sometimes things that are said weren't necessarily constructive criticism, it was just criticism," Casey chimes in. "I don't mean that for me, I mean that for everyone. You know, a judge might have said something about someone and it's like, well what good did that do them? Give them a way to fix that, if you feel that something's wrong, tell them a way to fix them instead of just like talking."

Casey is absolutely right. It made me crazy listening to the judges "advice" this season. A contestant would be told that (s)he was being too safe by performing in a style in which (s)he was comfortable. So the next time out, that same contestant would try something different and get slammed for "not knowing who you are as an artist." Kara was especially guilty of this. I can only imagine what it did to these poor kids, trying to figure out what to do next. Darned if you do, darned if you don't.

Oh and I'm with Casey - Brett Michaels over HC Jr any day of the week.

I, too, agree with Casey about the comments of the judges. No matter what these kids did, there was no pleasing them. As for the next idol judge...I again agree with Casey. Bret Michaels all the way!!

Bret and HC Jr. are both preferable to the current crop of judges. Kara was terrible this season, and when is the last time you heard Randy Jackson say something useful or intelligible? I'd like to see AI clean house on the judge's panel and start over with known professionals who have something to say. It might be fun to have former AI contestants rotate as guest judges.

For me, a typical comment from Simon that had no purpose was starting out his critique of Casey by calling him goldilocks.

Timberland is a pragmatic brand. They make a working man’s boot designed for shoveling snow. While the company has long engaged in sustainable practices, sustainable messaging has not been a part of their communication strategy, and it didn’t need to be until recently because sales were strong.

Harry Connick Jr would be amazing, not only did they say he was sincerely helping the contestants, but he is always entertaining. However, something went wrong with Casey's performace under HCJ's mentoring, and I think it was the arrangement created by HCJ.
If they eliminated the judges altogether and allowed the contestants to do full songs, I'd watch. After this season, I will never watch again. Kara just sucks, and disgusts me.
Aaron & Casey represent Texas well! Love them both.

I'm gonna watch you guys.. I hope you'll perform well :)

One of the most ridiculous, nasty things Simon said was to Aaron on Sinatra night ... "If Sinatra was a lion, you're a mouse". Well Sinatra wasn't a friggin lion at 16 yrs old! There were so many comments they made this year that had nothing to do with constructive criticism and were just nasty and cruel! The sexual harassment of Casey was despicable! They ought to have the kids sing a full song and quit letting the judges entertain themselves, because they aren't entertaining the viewers! I think most viewers want to hear the kids sing!!! Kara is just sickening to watch and hear! She needs to go!!

Bret Michaels all the way -- I agree!!!
