TV ratings: 'American Idol' finale way down from last year

It still dominated Wednesday night, but the "American Idol" finale fell significantly from its ratings performance last year, which in turn was off from the 2008 finale.

"Idol" and FOX averaged 23.15 million viewers and a 13.0 rating/22 share in households, about 17 percent lower than the preliminary numbers for the 2009 finale (the numbers will probably tick up some in the time zone-adjusted ratings; Zap2it will have those numbers when they come in). CBS was the best of the rest for the night, drawing 10.3 million viewers and a 6.6/11. ABC (4.8 million, 3.1/5) came in third, followed by NBC (3.3 million, 2.2/4) and The CW (1.4 million, 0.9/2).

FOX was similarly down in the adults 18-49 demographic, although its 7.8 rating far surpassed the rest of the field. CBS finished a distant second at 2.4, and ABC was third at 1.8. Neither NBC (0.9) nor The CW (0.6) broke the 1.0 mark.

ABC should have aired yet another DWTS ep. Perhaps a retrospective special. It would have done better than the movie! Movies do not do well anymore. What with Bootlegs,ON DEMAND, DVD rentals and sales, premium channels etc.... who didn't see it already? It was the last night of sweeps ABC shouldn't have wasted the ENTIRE night!!

"The two-hour "Idol" which saw Lee DeWyze crowned as the winner easily dominated broadcast competitors with 24.2 million viewers and a 8.2 preliminary adults 18-49 rating, according to time-zone-adjusted ratings sent by Fox. But that's down 18% from last year, when Adam Lambert and Kris Allen faced off, continuing an erosion that began in 2007."

Further evidence that Zap2it needs to start adjusting the focus of its site, else it starts to slump as well.

NBC really rolled over last night. Not sure what they could have aired but reruns of a already low rated reality show is just giving up. Perhaps a Sat Night Live ,Biggest Loser or Apprentice special. Those are at least modest hits. If it wasn't for the Winter Olympics this past season, NBC would have scored it worst average on record.

Is there a chance that people are at last getting a little tired of the l-o-n-g, drawn out process of picking a new "idol", and all the "hoopla" that goes with it? I myself have got to the point where I don't bother watching until it gets down to the last five or six contestants.

As a rabid former fan, I didn't watch a single minute of AI this year and will not in the future as long as Ellen the DEGENERATE is part of the show. Those that identify themselves by their sexual perversions are not now nor ever will be welcome in my home. American Idol used to be a place of hope and wholesomeness that sadly has fallen prey to those that promote and thrive on exploiting human debris. I know many others feel the same and this is a likely reason for the decline in viewership. I expect that with Simon's departure, next year's ratings will be even far worse.

Idiol was boring, FlopTina looked like a monster and a bad version of GaGa minus the voice, Janet was as fat as a pig, and Paula showed us how nasty Kara truly is.
